Pretty soon it will be Labor Day, and shortly thereafter school will start. But there’s still plenty of time for an evening of summer fun.
In cooperation with the Chesapeake Multicultural Resource Center (CMRC), the Quakers of Third Haven Friends Meeting will host their final Summer Fun Night of 2018 this Thursday, August 23, from 6-8 p.m.
There is a difference this time, however. While a good time was had by all at Idlewild Park last year, this summer’s weather has proven to be unpredictable. So the Quakers and the CMRC are hedging their bets by hosting Thursday’s Summer Fun Night at Third Haven, at 405 South Washington St. There it will be an indoor-outdoor event, so they’ll be ready for whatever the weather delivers. No one will get soaked or heatstroke.
If you came to last summer’s events, you know the drill. Third Haven will provide both fried and grilled chicken, iced tea and lemonade. This year the folks from CMRC will bring side dishes and desserts. Everyone is invited to bring something to share.
After supper, just like last year, guests are invited to play games for all ages, including: Egg-and-Spoon Race; Three-Legged Race; Water Balloon Toss; Wheelbarrow Race; Ring Toss; Cornhole; Ladder Toss; Capture the Flag; Chicken Toss Tag; Volleyball; Parachute; and more. Team up with your brother, sister, mom, dad, aunt, uncle, cousin, niece, nephew, son, daughter, or friend and show ‘em how it’s done.
“The point of Summer Fun is twofold,” said Jeanne Halpin, who co-chairs Third Haven’s Outreach Committee: “to give families an opportunity to have fun in the fresh air playing no-tech, old-fashioned games that people have loved for decades; and making connections, getting to know their neighbors from other corners of the community.”
“In a world where people are too often viewed as either Us or Them,” said Estela Vianey Ramirez, Assistant Director of CMRC, “it’s more important than ever to focus on what we have in common. While each of us has his or her own family, friends, clubs and churches, we are all members of the same community.”
The Quakers, officially known as the Religious Society of Friends, have been in Easton since the 1680s. They worship every Sunday from 10 to 11 a.m., and every Wednesday from 5:30 to 6 p.m. Worship is open to everyone.
Food will be served at 6. Games will begin around 6:30. The events are sponsored by Third Haven and CMRC. All are welcome to eat, play and enjoy fellowship with their neighbors, and admission is free. For more information, contact Pete Howell of THFM at 410-924-5752 or [email protected].
