Neighbors, family and friends along with Habitat volunteers and supporters recently celebrated a homecoming at 707 Wright Street in Cambridge with Nora Skiver. Skiver, a LPN with The Bay Pediatric Center, purchased the new construction and energy efficient 3-bedroom 1-bath home from Habitat for Humanity Choptank. This is the 63rd house completed by the nonprofit home builder and the 8th home completed in Cambridge since Habitat began building operations in Dorchester County in 2006.
In her journey to home ownership, Skiver contributed over 300 hours of sweat equity in building her future home and other Habitat homes, attended educational programs, saved over $4,500 for costs at closing, and met the Habitat program requirement of being debt-free by the date of settlement. Now, she assumes the full responsibilities of home ownership including paying home owner’s insurance and property taxes, maintaining her home, and repaying a no profit and zero-interest Habitat mortgage over the next 30 years.
Currently, Habitat Choptank has five projects underway: three new construction units and two home renovations. There are plans and land to start at least four more homes over the coming year if funds can be raised. Applications for home ownership are accepted year round. Qualifying candidates must meet income and residency standards; financial counseling may be available for applicants who need assistance in resolving outstanding debt.

The Cambridge home Skiver purchased is the 63rd home that Habitat Choptank has completed since its founding in 1992.
