The Herring Island Sailing Fleet (HISF) kicks off its 36th racing season on Saturday, May 12 on the Miles River in St. Michaels. This historic Saturday sailboat race series is open to experienced and novice sailors alike, with or without boats. HISF offers an active calendar of 15 spinnaker class races, family-oriented jib and main (JAM) races, social gatherings and picnics.
If you have your own boat but are new to racing, HISF offers a Racing Readiness Program for Captains. HISF works to place participants in a crew spot for the Saturday races on an existing fleet boat, and teams an experienced captain on your boat as a coach for the JAM races.
“The Herring Island fleet combines the best of competitive sailboat racing with the camaraderie of a great group of people,” said Fritz Moritz, head Herring. “We welcome anyone who has an interest in racing and a love for being on the water to become involved.”
In addition to the race series, HISF also provides boats to help with the MRYC Jr. Sailing Program and the organization’s own Vet Sailing Program, which provides wounded vets from Walter Reed Hospital the joy of taking a day sail on the Miles River.
Anyone interested in learning more about becoming a crew member or entering a boat in the series should contact Diane Staley at 410-745-5860 or visit the Fleet’s web site at www.hisf.org.
