After Railroad Avenue crosses over the Rails to Trails, the street name becomes Mt. Pleasant Rd., which leads to a neighborhood on a small peninsula laid out along an elongated circle with one dead end street. The waterfront properties face Broad Creek and one of the waterfront properties is historic Mt. Pleasant, circa 1829, believed to have been built by William Harrison in 1791. The house is now surrounded by newer houses like today’s featured property. This one-level rancher, built in 1972, has undergone a thorough renovation and is nestled in a clearing surrounded by towering trees for shade and privacy. Unlike houses built today in the Critical area, the house is much closer to the shoreline than allowed today.
The space planning works very well with the center wing containing the living, dining, kitchen and family room, between the wing containing the laundry, utility area, and garage and the bedroom wing at the other end of the house. The exterior color scheme of light gray, white windows and trim and black shutters is carried through to the interior design. The very “pleasant” massing of the house has a full front porch at the center wing and the two other wings are offset in different depths. The front porch wall is clad in vertical siding and the slender supports and railing maximize the view of the grounds. The other elevations are clad in lap siding. The rear elevation opens up to the water from the primary suite’s sliding doors leading to a private terrace, the double long bay windows in the living room and the pair of sliding doors in the family room. The hardscaped terrace off the family room includes a large pergola that is a true outdoor room. Like the primary bedroom, two of the other three bedrooms have private decks with water views so as you move through the house, you are constantly aware of the water.
The front door opens into a foyer with a chair rail and molding to create a wainscot and this detail is repeated throughout the house. Past the dining room is the huge living room with two bay windows defining seating around the fireplace and another area that is currently staged as a dining area. The dining and living rooms are detailed with beautiful hardwood floors and coffered ceilings painted bright white to reflect the sunlight. The marvelous vista from the living room continues through the seating nook at the kitchen to the family room and ends at the pergola creating great flow for relaxing with family or entertaining.
I especially liked the seating nook opposite the kitchen with its double unit window’s water view and the wide side wall opening that might have once been a window in an exterior wall that now offers views of the family room, terrace, and pergola. The hardwood flooring in the living room changes to porcelain tile flooring in a medium gray in the sitting area and kitchen The white kitchen cabinets, sleek hardware, backsplash of glossy tile set on the diagonal, and the stainless steel appliances complete the contemporary design. I also liked how the upper cabinets extend to the ceiling for extra storage.
The hall behind the kitchen is a convenient service area of closets, powder room, laundry room, utility closet, pantry and a door directly to the garage. The family room has a porcelain tile pattern of simulated wood planks in light gray and the sliding doors at the rear and along the side of the room make this a great spot to relax by the TV while enjoying the water view. The spacious terrace with the pergola is a perfect spot for relaxing after a day on the water or for dancing under the stars.
The primary suite is located at the corner of the house overlooking the landscape and water. Its interior design continues the beautiful hardwood floors, light gray walls and a white wainscot with molding. The bedroom’s sliding doors to a private deck and the side window offer panoramic water views. The primary bath has medium gray porcelain tile pavers, a large, tiled shower with glass doors and white dual lavatory cabinet with a marble white countertop with thin veins of blue. The light gray walls are the perfect backdrop for any color of towels.
Each of the two other bedrooms at the side of the house has the same interior treatment as the primary bedroom and each bedroom also has sliding doors to a deck that is also a safe emergency exit. The smallest at the end of the bedroom wing’s hall faces the front corner of the house so there are no water views. If a family didn’t need four bedrooms, this quiet corner of the house would be a great office/homework space. Its current interior design has twin beds with padded gray headboards with stud accents, white duvets, blue throws and a trio of accent pillows from aqua, creamy white and three fish in different patterns floating on a background of white.
Private location overlooking Broad Creek, very close to St. Michaels, 3.4 acres of lawn, woods and pier with a large dock for sunbathing. Great one-level floor plan for a young couple with children to enjoy the Eastern Shore lifestyle and to age-in-place to welcome children and grandchildren home. Wonderful outdoor rooms of decks, hardscaped terrace, pergola and pool. Neutral interiors ready for your own personal touches- a great property!
