According to a wikipedia definition, Humanity is simply “the condition of being human”. The word can also refer to “a set of strengths focused on “tending others” “ or it could reference the human species as a whole. Humanity is a broad subject open to many artistic interpretations and for their July/August show the artists of Main Street Gallery will share their very personal visions of this theme through their drawings, paintings, photographs, sculptures, ceramics, fiber and mixed media works.
”Humanity” which will be on view from June 30 through August 28 was inspired in part by the 50th anniversary of the racial disturbances in Cambridge and in part by Barbara Lockhardt’s moving novel, ”Elizabeth’s Field” about a freed slave woman who owned a farm in Dorchester county. The artists are very excited to announce that on second Saturday, July 8, Barbara Lockhardt will do a book signing at the gallery from 5-8 pm.
There will be two artists receptions for “Humanity” on second Saturdays, July 8 and August 12 from 5-8 pm. The receptions are free and everyone is invited. Light refreshments will be served. Main Street gallery is located at 518 Poplar St., in Cambridge, directly across from Jimmie and Sooks Restaurant. Their regular hours are Friday through Monday 11-4pm. There is parking on the street and behind the gallery.
