The Sunday Star Democrat for June 16 included a front-page article, “Dorchester school board vice president resigns,” which mentioned that the new school superintendent, Dr. Jymil Thompson, talked about the need to increase their ranking from the present 23d of 24 Maryland school districts. This made me wonder about the ratings for all of the counties on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. I found the following slightly differing by-county listings on two websites:
Schooldigger.com’s Best School Districts in Maryland offers the following school district ratings: Queen Anne’s County (number 3), Worcester County (number 4), Talbot County (number 13), Caroline County (number 16), Wicomico County (number 17), Kent County (number 19), Dorchester County (number 22), and Somerset County (number 23), followed only by Baltimore City (number 24).
Niche.com’s 2024 Best School Districts in Maryland offers the following ratings: Worcester County (number 3), Queen Anne’s County (number 8), Wicomico County (number 13), Talbot County (number 15), Caroline County (number 16), after which in order but without numerical rankings fall Kent County, Somerset County, and Dorchester County, followed only by Prince George’s County.
Our schools should be doing better than this.
