Letter to Editor: Renee Good needs a Talbot County Vigil

January 10, 2026 by Letter to Editor 26 Comments

Share

I would like to propose that residents of Talbot County hold a vigil for Renee Nicole Good by the Courthouse. Certainly, we can pull together to honor the life of someone whose life was taken too early. Easton held a vigil a few months ago for Charlie Kirk. Perhaps we might honor our values in every situation and not just the ones we share via our politics. This would suggest that we are not cherry picking our values to suit any agenda, rather we are demonstrating that our values are evenly applied and that we love our neighbors, no matter what. That we might actually have the capacity to share with one another, regardless of political affiliation, our common humanity. It might show that WE WILL NO LONGER ALLOW OURSELVES TO BE DIVIDED FOR POLITICAL GAIN! Let’s do THAT.

Let us be one people that stands together and resists tyranny in all its forms. We can show that we will never accept that political violence, whether it is committed by rogue individuals or by the state, has no place in our society or our world. Let us demonstrate that our community cares about each other. That we might come together….so that, if, when some crisis or calamity strikes, we may rest assured that in OUR community, our political divisions will be overridden by our shared values…our common humanity.

Yes, a vigil might honor this talented woman. Let’s think of some other ways, too. She was a poet; why not read some of her work? How about a GoFundMe to support her family? I’m sure there are more than these ways to honor her memory…

Will we honor everyone who attempts to kill a law enforcement officer in the future?
All officers or just the ones enforcing federal laws?
I’m having trouble understanding what point you are attempting to make in this forum.
(This posting will not be seen by anyone because it’s not in agreement with the Editors viewpoint.)

Renee was murdered by a cocky SOB who loves
filming with one hand and aiming his piece with another.
If he had been in The Marine Corps, he’d expect swift justice, possible brig time or more.
No, he is being protected by little men who are big fascist and he swaggers like a man itching to kill.
      Justice will come…..

If you look at the still-frame photo (posted above) from the video of her last moments alive, and watch that video taken by an ICE agent, where she says, “I’m not angry at you”, to that ICE agent, just before being shot to death, three times, in the face, you might reconsider the statements in your letter and the information you’ve been told about the facts.

      Dear Glenn,
Aa you can see, The Talbot Spy was willing to print your viewpoint. Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. Although I do not believe Renee Good was attemping to kill the ICE officer, I believe that she did not deserve death for attempting to flee the scene. Many jurisdictions have laws to that effect. Taking down a license number is usually sufficient for apprehending a criminal. I believe everyone, especially the president, should allow investigations to play out and avoid making judgments until such investigations are concluded. That is our rule of law in America, or, at least, used to be.

Good points Mary and I thought it was ICE’s role to round up illegal immigrants not to deal w/ law enforcement issues. Renée clearly wasn’t an immigrant – she was white and spoke English. ICE should not have even been involved in this matter.

Glen, I am sure many people will see that video differently. I support our law enforcement and will never suggest that we honor anyone who would kill our law enforcement officers.

Before I wrote that post, I have looked for the insights of law enforcement officers on the use of force. I will not say that I am any sort of expert on that subject. But I found a lot of things from reputable sources regarding ICE’s scope of mission…and that scene was rather far afield of what ICE is supposed to be able to do. Another federal official noted that firing into a moving vehicle is to go outside of what police are trained to do….NEVER fire into a moving vehicle because you do not know where that vehicle will go if the driver is incapacitated.

These “procedural concerns” do not come close to the bigger idea that any cop can now be judge, jury and executioner…and that the top levels of our government will concoct a narrative to explain it away before the smell of spent gunpowder wafts away on the breeze. Moreover, there are reports from around the country of immigrants and CITIZENS getting the daylights beat out of them by ICE agents.

I served in the military and almost half of my 21 year military career was dedicated to the Global War on Terror….where our forces sought out and destroyed state sponsored terrorists and their networks. I am dismayed that we now have a state sponsored terror network (ICE) paid for with YOUR tax dollars and mine….delivering injustice with impunity inside the country I love.

So, I intend to hold a vigil. And I pray it will be peaceful. I would invite you personally. If not to honor Renee Nicole Good’s passing…..to honor the fact that as a nation we must unite with one another and start finding some common ground our the American Experiment in Democracy will soon be dead and everything we ever thought was great or could be, will be swept away.

This represents the best of us, the spirit that animates us all, the source of our very being. What binds us to one another, not just as a people but as human beings, is our capacity to love, to accept our differences and to recognize the power we have to unite in the face of tragedy, and, through that experience, to overcome the fear, the loss, the suffering.

In the end, it is our relationships that matter, the things we have shared and the comfort we have given and received from family, friends and strangers, another name for unmet friends.

This is a terrific idea. Thank you James, let’s pitch in and put it together.

I would go to such a vigil, but it would be hard to organize. For one thing, the Tablot County sheriff would have to cooperate and he’s a MAGA Republican who has used the power of his office to support Trump.

Republicans will probably respond to your letter by saying she should have been killed. She had it coming, to paraphrase JD Vance. ICE agents have a license to kill. Trump personally directed that they don’t get fully trained in dealing with the public.

Worst case, she moved her car and brushed against the ICE agent. She probably moved in her car in fear. An ICE agent told her “get the F*** out of your car!” Both of her hands could be seen – no evidence of a weapon. He did not fall down. He killed an unarmed woman for no good reason. And Noem, Vance, and Trump all lied about what happened,

I agree such a vigil should be about ending violence. But it will be political because only Republicans routinely promote sadism and violence.

When I wrote…I did not expect it to happen. But I am working on it. My hope…..a pipe dream perhaps…is that we might share in sorrow even with some who would disagree with us and we may find unity of purpose as a community.

    She dosen’t deserve a vigil.
She was a trained professional agitator interfering with a federal agency doing its work.
She ignored a lawful order and used her cad as a weapon to possibly hurt or murder a law enforcement officer

Your comment demonstrates what’s wrong in our world today. You do not shoot an unarmed person in a car. Otherwise it’s called murder. Please educate yourself.

I’m really interested in knowing what evidence you have that supports your statement that she was a trained agitator. Sounds like something Trump said and of course he also said the ICE agent was run over. What a miraculous recovery to be able to fire 3 rounds after being run over – the last 2 of which were point blank when the vehicle was clear of him. For the record, LE personnel are NOT supposed to position themselves in front of an occupied vehicle and NOT supposed to be on a cell phone while enforcing the law and they ARE (at least professional LE personnel) trained to de-escalate a situation not escalate it.

This is a great idea. As ICE continues to terrorize communities and more citizens protest their violent and cruel ways, people are getting hurt and dying. ICE is challenging our values and responsibilities to our fellow men, women and children. I am deeply ashamed of the approach our government is presently taking to “fix” our immigration problems . Surely as a people, we can do better?

At the very least, Renee Nicole Good, deserves a vigil.

Absolutely there should be a vigil for Renee Good!
She was a Mother, Daughter, Wife and Sister whose
Life was taken unjustly by ICE! We need more compassion and love in our country.. not the hate
    Of the past few years.

Be happy to make the call to Sheriff Joe – I will see if we can just gather on the sidewalk in front of the Courthouse fencing. I will get an evening – like 4:30 or 5. Bring candles, poetry, and prayers for all of us. we need to work together through this challenging time.

Donna, I am responding here, hopefully this comes off as respectfully as possible.

In May 2021, a local police officer in Delmar was killed in the line of duty during an interaction with a person during a response. There was an incredible outpouring by the Eastern Shore Community.

If such a thing should occur again, I suspect that many would come together again.

For what it is worth, I served as a fire fighter in the USAF for 21 years and 3 more as a DOD Civilian. I worked closely with Base police and at times with State Police. I support them, whole heartedly.

My being a “liberal” seems to make folks on the right think I am against them or the values that I think most Americans share. I am not an enemy of conservatism. We liberals are not your enemies.
