It’s probably a good idea, if one is going to submit the occasional letter to the editor, to identify oneself at least in ways that are relevant.
So, as a registered Republican, the undersigned voted, with the rest of the household, for Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush, and later, in a household of one, Obama. One might then conclude that that household of (two) registered Republicans had voted in presidential elections in a fairly independent manner. In doing so, we racked up a record of choosing winners.
When Donald Trump announced his run for the presidency, I registered as a Democrat so that I could vote in the primary. Donald Trump appeared to me to be not only unfit for office, but a very dangerous man as well. In the general election I picked my first loser since not voting for Nixon; but Hilary Clinton only lost the electoral college vote.
Being a registered Democrat still didn’t stop me from voting for Larry Hogan, Jr. for governor of Maryland. Like his father, one of the first to have Nixon’s number, Hogan is a good man, capable of independent thought. Then, too, I voted for a Republican in a local election because I thought he was the right person for the job.
This time around, I’m sorry I can’t vote for Larry Hogan as a Senator, but to me, it is vitally important that the Democrats hold onto the Senate now. And Donald Trump is more dangerous than ever.
Just so you know who is writing.

Thank you!
Dick Deerin says
Excellent letter and unassailable logic.
William Keppen says
Thank you for sharing your thoughtful evaluation. I concur.
Dennis Mesko says
You are so correct. Hogan was a good governor but we can’t afford to have another Repub vote in the senate.
Al DiCenso says
Sadly, I must agree. I too am a life-long registered Republican; I sadly admit that I voted for Trump in 2016 but voted in 2020 for the first time for a Democrat candidate for president, Joe Biden, and will vote for Kamala Harris in November. The thought of even the possibility of Trump’s winning terrifies me, and we must have a solid Democrat congress to offset the tragedy of a Trump victory if that happens. On the other hand, do I accept the possibility of a solid “D” Government? Yes, in order to flush out the MAGA stench remaining in Washington. The playing field will level itself out in the mid-terms as it always does.
Deirdre LaMotte says
You are amazingly well versed on the GOP
threat. As a former Republican, I thank you.
It is not easy, well done Sir!

Francine DeSanctis says
I applaud you Ms.Driggs for caring enough about this country to vote with integrity and to secure a future of hope.
Hogan is a good man, but he does represent a Republican majority in the Senate where Trump’s influence will still be felt.
Chris Cavey says
If you like Larry Hogan you should vote for him. He was a great Governor, was very responsive to his constituents and I am confident he will continue this path of public service. Your worry of him being the 51st Senator is unfounded with the GOP highly likely to carry five other states in addition to Maryland (AZ, MT, OH, PA and WV.) So your vote for Alsobrooks will only come back to haunt you. Maryland will only be changing the national make-up by adding a Senator who listens and works for the people of our State.
Mickey Terrone says
Larry Hogan will have to join the Trump Corruption Machine by answering to the radical fanatics who have taken over Republican congressional leadership in both Houses of Congress. Hogan had to work with Maryland Democrats. Now he has to work with people who do whatever Trump tells them to do. He would be a complete misfit among them and will have to bow and scrape to Trump and his radical deadbeats in the Senate. I’m disappointed he chose to run under those circumstancces, but he knew what he was doing. After all, he’s a Republican politician and he knows who’s boss of that formerly respectable organization.
Beth Mufson says
Thank you Peggy! I hope all the Republicans out there are listening.
Birgit Stuart says
Although a life-long Democrat, I think Hogan is a great man, and was a wonderful governor ( who deserved and received my vote). However, I like Ms. Driggs, have the same concern regarding the senate. I just wish Hogan had run for President.
MaryLou Watson says
I, too, am sorry not to vote for Larry Hogan. I feel he was a representative for all when he was Governor and did a nice balanced job. Unfortunately, he chose a bad time to run for the Senate. But Like you, I think the Dems must hold onto the Senate. The ex-President is yet more dangerous and unchecked than before and this is quite worrisome. Thank you for your letter.
Steve Lingeman says
Ditto. Ditto. Ditto!
Jim Bachman says
Interesting. I registered temporarily as a Republican just for the pleasure of voting against Ted Cruz (but not for Donald Trump) in the 2016 primaries.
