Letter to Editor: The Real Threat of Trillionaires

February 22, 2025 by Letter to Editor

Share
There are the soon-to-be trillionaires (Musk, Bezos, Zuckerberg)…. and then there are the rest of us. There are people who seem to believe that these trillionaires are going to look after us, and who believe we are immune to the massive budget cuts proposed by the current administration, Some of these believers are writing to the Spy in support of the current administration.  I encourage those people to take a good, hard look at what is happening.  The House of Representatives has proposed a budget in which Medicaid is by far the largest source of spending cuts targeted by their budget resolution. In fact, 44% of their proposed cuts—or $880 billion out of the $2 trillion—are coming from Medicaid.  Of course, there is still Medicare.  However, this administration’s habit of saying one thing and doing another makes me believe that neither Medicare nor Social Security is safe.  My guess is that there are many of us who would be financially strapped (or worse) without these programs.  I wonder what it is going to take for someone besides the kind of liberal Democrat I am, to speak up in opposition to this Congress?

Right now they seem to only be going after the program which will devastate poor children and disabled people.  But why should I care?  I don’t need Medicaid. However, Trump’s commerce secretary, Howard Lutnick, praised the Department of Government Efficiency because it was “going to cut a trillion dollars of waste, fraud, and abuse.” Lutnick told Fox personality Jesse Watters, “You know Social Security is wrong, you know Medicare and Medicaid is wrong, so he’s going to cut one trillion.”  He lumps together Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security. Even if one doesn’t believe that the severe reduction of Medicaid is wrong in so many ways, I would think that anyone who thinks about it at all can see the danger to Medicare and Social Security.

They’ve managed this in just one month. The trillionaires have 3 years and 11 months to come after all of the rest of us.

Yes, indeed what’s going to happen to us during the next 1 months?
If the Constitution and Rule of Law have suffered this much damage (some irreparable), in one month, what’s on the horizon? There is no game plan, just the shock factor and thumbing their nose at Laws that have stood successfully for over 200 years.
Trump’s reason for seeking the presidency was to avoid jail and numerous trials. Is this a valid reason for voting for him?
Look in the mirror and answer that question, and then vote in 2026.

Eliminating health care has predictable results: increased mortality, increased suffering and increased despair. Disease, injuries, births, disabilities, old age, mental illnesses all require medical care and treatment. To deny treatment to anyone because they happen to be a child, or poor, or disabled is morally bankrupt, cruel and disgraceful.

Alas, they are already coming after us. DOGE made major cuts to the agency responsible for regulating self-driving cars. Tesla wants to put self-driving cars on the roads next year. The new Tesla truck is the most recalled truck in automobile history for safety and other problems. Trump allowed Musk to determine for himself when he may have a conflict of interest. So far, Musk has had none. The rest of us should think about all this if we go on a road trip next year.

As for Bezos and Zuckerberg, they have given Trump millions of dollars – to his personal account, not to the taxpayers. Even Melania is getting $28M from Amazon. These multi-billionaires will be paid back in some way. It is only a matter of time. and I am willing to bet the money will be coming from the US Treasury.

Thank you for your letter, Mr. Parsons.

The utter disgust that I feel for the things that this regime is doing to our country is hard to express. Our country is under siege right now and the people responsible for this have the intention to destroy a society that has taken more than 100 years to build. Starting with programs begun during the Roosevelt administration which brought us out of the worst depression in US history through the great society programs in Lyndon Johnson’s administration we have endeavored to build a more just and equitable society. The idea that a president has been elected who would tear down and eviscerate programs that benefit all Americans and not just the chosen few is deeply flawed policy and must be fought with all of our resources. This must not stand.

Darrell, 100% agree. I have absolutely no trust in what they say or who said it!

Agree with your letter Mr. Parsons. Sadly, all the people who voted for Trump are happy to see he’s keeping his campaign promises of “cutting government fraud and waste”, getting rid of immigrants, and dismantling the so-called “woke culture”. Every day another grenade is rolled into the room in order to create an atmosphere of chaos and to provide cover for the many ways Trump, his family, and his cronies, are going to enrich themselves on the backs of US citizens. It will take a little more time, but when egg prices don’t fall, and gas prices don’t fall, health care expenses are not covered, or, maybe, a social security check doesn’t arrive, there will be a rude awakening for his devotees.

The Affordable Care Act was a real gift to Talbot County residents. Folks with no healthcare for 10-15 years popped up in out health care office with full blown diabetes, Heart, kidney, vision, and vascular problems. They walked into the office in heart failure, high blood pressure with no meds – for years they had gone into the hospital for serious problems and once their 30 day prescriptions ran out, then just continued on until the next crisis – The medical community has worked diligently to make sure that health care is available thanks to Medicaid and Medicare and expanded commercial policies. We have a healthier work force. But now we see the greedy fingers of Musk, Trump, and the Republican Congress willing to trade the health of the poor, the disabled, and children for a tax break for the wealthy.
Can we sink any lower? We have to stand up and speak out now, not next week or next month. If for no other reason than it will cost us more for doing less now. But we are better than this – we need to protect and defend the Constitution We must badger our Congressperson Harris, missing in action though he is, and repeatedly leave messages to keep their hands off Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, USAID, the military, the government. It may be too late next month…..
