Letter to the Editor: Has Senator Addie Eckardt Earned Your Loyalty?

Has Senator Addie Eckardt Earned Your Loyalty?

In talking to people about the race for State Senate in District 37 between Republican incumbent Addie Eckardt and Democratic challenger Holly Wright, I’ve been struck by the deep loyalty many of Senator Eckardt’s constituents feel towards her. I’ve pondered what to me is a disconnect between their loyalty to her on one hand, and her disloyalty to their best interests through her voting on the other.

Loyalty to a friend, family member or community member is very different from loyalty to an elected representative. Loyalty to an elected representative is about whether or not that person is loyal to your values. When you vote to elect someone, you are supporting what they vote for.

If you plan to vote for Addie Eckardt for another term as State Senator, I ask you to think about whether she has earned your political loyalty. Do you agree with Senator Eckardt’s voting record? Does she vote for your values? Let’s look at her record.

She voted against authorizing automatic voter registration, against requiring Presidential candidates to disclose their tax returns, against early voting and against public campaign financing for candidates for the General Assembly.
She voted against raising the hourly minimum wage from $7.25, against employer-provided sick leave, and against extending unemployment benefits to part-time employees.

She consistently votes against protecting the equal rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people. She voted against same-sex marriage and against prohibiting sexual orientation and gender-identity discrimination. (Full disclosure: I am married to my wife who I’ve been with for 37 years.)

She voted against a bill to prohibit fracking.

These are just examples. There’s more. Don’t believe me. Check www.VoteSmart.org, an excellent nonpartisan voter information site.

I believe Senator Eckardt has betrayed the loyalty of her supporters by voting against what is in their best interest. Thus, the loyalty given to her is not reciprocated, only going one way.

I will vote for Holly Wright for State Senate because I believe she will faithfully represent all the people of District 37, including working and poor people, LGBT people, immigrants and people of color. People in District 37 need to earn a living wage to get out of poverty; to have access to medical and mental health care available through expanded Medicaid. We need a senator who will vote to protect our environment.

Please support Holly Wright for Senate. Her website is Hollywrightforsenate.com.
