Last Sunday, I woke up worried. The League of Women Voters was hosting the sole public forum with First Congressional candidates for the general election, interest was high, and seating would be limited. Temperatures had turned cool and the wind was blowing. Our national politics are polarized. Would that division trickle down to my community? Would there be tension and rancor among people jockeying to get in line for the event?
Maryland’s First spans more than 250 miles from Baltimore County on south down the Shore to Worcester and Somerset counties. Knowing that the Forum venue holds less than 200 people, Jesse Colvin’s campaign organized a Debate Tailgate. The offer of local hospitality had Colvin supporters from across the district arriving in Easton in the late morning. Enthusiasm was high and when a line started forming around noon, they skipped refreshments to queue up.
With loads of pizza, cookies and hot cider left, Jordan Colvin, the candidate’s wife, started shuttling food to those standing in line. Several of us joined in to help. Treats were offered to all regardless of candidate support. The atmosphere was friendly and convivial. My worries were put to rest.
In my family, it was understood at an early age that voting is a responsibility and a privilege. While I’ve been a faithful voter for 30 years, I’ve never been involved in a campaign. Jesse Colvin changed that.
Jesse is a proven leader. He’s a Veteran with a servant heart and a track record for going to the root cause of complex problems. He’s the right candidate at the right time for this district.
If you meet other Colvin volunteers, a corps of supporters now numbering more than 1,600, you’ll find that many of us are first-time campaigners. Inspired by Jesse, we’re knocking on doors and calling our neighbors to ask for their support. Election Day is less than 2 weeks away. There’s still time to be part of this movement in every county across MD01 and to help send a new generation of leadership to Washington for all of us.
