In case you missed the CBS 60 Minutes interview with Director of National Drug Control Policy Michael Botticelli, it’s well worth watching.
Botticelli, 27 years in recovery himself, is on a mission to help reframe the issue of addiction in America. He is adamant about acknowledging the failed “War on Drugs,” the waste of a trillion dollars to incarcerate (50% of all inmates in US prisons are there for drug-related crimes) and seeks to steer US policy toward treating addiction as a brain disease, not a moral failing. ”Addicts should be patients, not prisoners,” he says.
Botticelli is being recognized by the addiction treatment community as a strong new voice in its endeavor to de-stigmatize addiction and treat it as a national health problem.
