Boat builder, fisherman, environmentalist Mike Vlahovich will be the speaker for the Brown Bag lunch at St. Michaels Library on Monday, January 5, 2015 at noon. Mike held the elected position of Town Commissioner of St. Michaels from 2010 to 2014.
Mike and his wife Paula moved their family to St. Michaels in 2001 when he accepted the position of Project Manager of the state funded Skipjack Restoration Project hosted at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum.
In 2003 Mike founded a new bi-coastal maritime non-profit, the Coastal Heritage Alliance, dedicated to the preservation of the vessels, skills and stories of commercial fishing families. Mike held the position of Founding Director of the Alliance for 11 years, but has recently stepped down to allow for new, younger leadership to assume the helm.
Some of his more recent attention has been given to introducing watermen from Maryland and Virginia to the emerging field of authentic heritage tourism; training prison inmates in the skills required to restore Maryland`s historic fleet of skipjacks; and helping to create and deliver at-sea experiential learning opportunities for college students. In his spare time,
Mike also attends Goucher College where he is working towards his master`s degree in the Art of Cultural Sustainability.
