While Tom Hill notes that the Hill family arrived in Talbot County about a hundred years ago, it was on his mother’s side, the Shanahans and Elliots, that have held such strong roots locally for a few centuries. Hill credits that link to the past and his love for the area as primary motivators in his giving so much of his time and personal resources to the causes he believes provide exceptional services to his community.
In Talbot Spy’s second installment of our Mid-Shore Lives history series, Tom Hill talks about growing up in Easton, and the influence of special mentors who helped him grow as both a person and a professional, particularly after his father’s life was cut short on the beaches of Normandy in 1944. From starting in the investment world with C.T. Williams almost fifty years ago, Tom recalls his early days, as well as his special friendship with Chip Mason, of Legg-Mason fame, after he had bought company in the 1980s. It is now under the Morgan Stanley umbrella.
Tom also talks about philanthropy and the unique legacy of the W. Alton Jones family, as well as organizations that have meant the most to him, including the United Fund, the YMCA, the Midshore Riverkeeper Conservancy, and holds a very special place for the Choptank Habitat for Humanity.

Shar McBee says
Much of Tom Hill’s philanthropy is behind the scenes…things that the public never hears about. A real leader is someone who knows how to release active forces. This is Tom. He makes other people successful.
