Oh No! Easton’s Harris Teeter is on the Block

July 10, 2024 by The Spy

Share

When Harris Teeter came to Easton a few years ago, it was a breath of fresh air. While some residents were disappointed that Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s didn’t feel it made sense for an Eastern Shore store, Harris Teeter was still a step up from a solid but nonetheless b-list of grocery store chains like Acme and Giant.

However, the news on WTOP is that the Easton branch of the up-market food store is on the list of five in the region to be sold off can only be seen as a setback. Nonetheless, wishful thinking can only hope for another  first-rate grocery store on the Mid-Shore to take place.

And we’re talking about you Whole Foods.

I’m sure it’s a long shot but would love to see a Wegmans or Trader Joe’s.

The price of the Kroger-Albertson merger should not include Easton’s Harris-Teeter. Easton has a quite competitive grocery market.

  3. Tracey Mitchell says

    July 11, 2024 at 9:45 AM

What we all should be more concerned about is the monopoly that the Kroger Albertsons merger will create. The FTC has challenged the merger. Prepare for yet another increase in grocery prices.

      July 12, 2024 at 8:08 AM

Tracey, You are exactly right. Let’s hope the merger does not take place. Right now in Easton we have a good variety of grocery stores to choose from. If Harris Teeter leaves we will have fewer choices. I didn’t like it when Albertsons merged Safeway with Acme since I feel that the quality at Acme went down.

WHY SELL OFF THE EASTON Harris Teeter, It very popular, Great service,Friendly people, and a very relax atmosphere.
SOUNDS LIKE SOME CEO HAS DECIDED HE WANTS MORE MONEY THAN HE is WoRTH FOR ANOTHER BONUS AND Compension. What the Hell is the Economy coming to?

AS A SENIOR CITIZEN & NATIVE TO EASTON MD. I DO NOT WANT HARRIS TEETER TO LEAVE THE EASTON MD. LOCATION!!! LOVE THEIR STORE, THE QUALITY OF THEIR MEATS, ESPECIALLY THE BEEF & THE STAFF ARE EXCELLENT. OVERALL, IN MY OPION, IT IS & HAS BEEN EASTON’S BEST GROCERY STORE FOR QUALITY & PRICE

Agreed!! Great store re products, staff and cost. Always lots of customers there. They’ve expanded their checkout so no more waiting to pay the bill. Please: don’t leave us🙏🤡

Classic American business management. It’s all about feeding the “mother ship” instead of catering to the local hoi pollie!

  7. Al DiCenso says

    July 11, 2024 at 3:37 PM

I’ve been a regular shopper at H-T since moving here in 2018. They are not the same store as they were then; their produce is not nearly as fresh (my primary criterion in choosing a market) as then, and they are removing many national brands and replacing them with house labels. On the other hand, their meat, seafood, and cheese departments are all first rate, and I hope they will not be changed. As an aside, my daughter-in-law shops Piggly Wiggly in the Atlanta area, and says they are great (and she’s as fussy as I am!)

    • Laurie says

      July 11, 2024 at 9:58 PM

I have noticed the same changes and rarely shop there anymore, preferring to support our local farmers markets for everything fresh and more-local Graul’s for what I can’t get at the markets.

  8. Michael Davis says

    July 11, 2024 at 4:01 PM

The Easton Harris Teeter store is one of the better ones in terms of quality. If the merger of Kroger and Albertsons is approved, the agreement is that our HT will be sold to C&S Services. They run Piggly Wiggly and Grand Union. I have no experience with Piggly Wiggly, but Grand Union is not known for it’s quality.

Unfortunately, it seems there is no chance for a Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s. I think we’ll be lucky if the store replacing HT is of equal quality. Corporate mergers rarely result in good things for consumers.

    • Barbara Perry says

      July 12, 2024 at 8:13 AM

I too have shopped at Piggy Wiggly when visiting relatives in the South. From what I remember the stores are nice. I still don’t want to lose Harris Teeter. I think a Wegman’s would be nice to have too but it seems that too is out of the question.

  9. Eva M. Smorzaniuk MD says

    July 11, 2024 at 5:09 PM

This should dispel the last notion that we have healthy capitalism and competition in our food sector economy. Eventually everything that Americans buy in a grocery store will be picked and priced by one mega food corporation. I’m so disappointed to lose HT as the quality is great, the prices competitive, and the staff amazingly friendly and helpful. For me the take home message is to patronize the farmers market and local food producers to a greater degree in the future. Better for my health and the health of my community.

    • Laurie says

      July 11, 2024 at 10:17 PM

I believe you are 100% correct and your solution is a good one that we all need to consider. I shifted my fresh purchases to our farmers markets and local producers like Sprout several years ago. It’s more fun and social to shop this way and it feels good to support our very hard-working local farmers/producers and to participate in creating a healthier, more sustainable community-based alternative to the Big Food corporate takeover and elimination of choice and health that has begun.

How about an O’MALLEY’S that would bring back the best of the ultimate best : Cost friendly goods and plenty for everyone’s family to be able to easily afford and they hire ALOT of people , train them and offer great incentives and they love children , the elderly and midnight snackers , college students, they hire quick witted smart farmers who have a great sense of humor and love to make work fun so you never have to work a day in your life because working there would be fun they hire bakers with hands on experience and you would be able to smell their goods the minute you walk through the door deep dish apple pies, fresh ripe banana bread .they would have planting parties to give you ideas for your own garden get together and welcome customers as well as travelers/tourists to participate in the expansive array of activities

In 2016: “The Easton Planning Commission denied an application on Thursday, Dec. 16, for a new grocery store by Lidl Operations LLC proposed on a vacant space in Waterside Village.” They wanted to use all three lots planned for smaller stores. So maybe?

  11. Fred Flintstone says

    July 11, 2024 at 9:31 PM

I don’t want Whole Foods in Easton, groceries are expensive enough already. Never thought of Giant as B-list either. Arrogant snob.

  12. Carol Boland says

    Yes!
    Whole Foods!
    Not Trader Joes!

  15. Nina Salome says

While Harris Teeter is a nice store, if things change, it would be wonderful to have more fresh, organic food more easily available on the Eastern shore.

  16. Easy Go says

    July 12, 2024 at 4:52 PM

Piggly Wiggly it will be… if this merger flies.

  17. Ed Conway says

    July 14, 2024 at 3:41 PM

It’s going to be a piggly wiggly grocery store you’ll love it. They are all over the south

  18. Dorothy and John Beary says

    July 14, 2024 at 3:42 PM

We like Harris Teeters and hope it stays in Easton MD. Love the way the checkouts work.

  19. Amelia says

    July 15, 2024 at 11:48 AM

Please leave well enough alone. I look forward to shopping here. I know I will find fresh out of the ordinary items not found in other stores. They provide choices you can’t find in the other stores. This would be devastating to the community.

  20. MaryLou Armstrong says

    July 17, 2024 at 5:29 PM

Or a FRESH MARKET? We definitely need a good, healthy grocery store with many of the feature of Harris Teeter but better meat and seafood!

  21. Allison Szczukowski says

    July 21, 2024 at 12:54 PM

This cannot happen and I love this store.
