I bought this photo, dry mounted, signed and soiled, not sure where. I liked it because of memories of taking my boat to Fairlee Creek, spending nights and weekends with family, friends. I wondered about “George R. Merrill” and that day. I searched a few times without success until this month when I arrived here, amazed – voila! I shared the article with a friend that recently settled in Chestertown, the story rang some good memories so I sent it to him, and back to the shore. He called a few days later with thanks wanting to know about Fairlee Creek, he and his wife wanted to find where the picture was taken. I told him of my time in Fairlee and speculated the background was the east shore of Orchard’s Creek, near the mouth. That day they drove to Fairlee, down roads and driveways until they found the spot, seeing those trees, many years later. The photo is in their living room with new memories, thanks to George Merrill.

One addition to the letter -Is this the photo he printed that day and then sent to The Talbot Spy for publication with the essay?

This photo was a favorite of George’s. He had printed it several times over the years and needed to print it once more that Thanksgiving Day. The print you (or your friend) have is one that was printed long before, but from the same negative. So glad that it continues to bring good memories. Fairlee Creek was a favorite anchorage.
