Internationally known sailor, lecturer, writer, and commentator Gary Jobson visits the Oxford Community Center on Sunday, March 9, 2014, at 4 p.m., to present “Celebrating Sailing,” a look back at the history of the America’s Cup and a review of last year’s 34th America’s Cup—one of the most exciting comebacks in all of sports. As a commentator for NBC, Gary was on the water every day broadcasting the 34th America’s Cup races live and will present an inside look at this amazing story. In addition, Gary will preview his new film, “Unfurling the World, the Voyages of Irving and Electa Johnson 1933-1956,” and a feature on speed sailing, the quest to be the fastest sailboat on the water.
Gary won the America’s Cup in 1977 and the legendary Fastnet Race in 1979, both as a tactician for Ted Turner. For more than four decades, he has tirelessly promoted the sport of sailing to audiences around the world. Through lecture tours, books, events, and as ESPN’s and later NBC’s commentator, Gary’s face and voice have become synonymous with sailing in America.
Gary has won many awards over the course of his illustrious career. He was inducted into the National Sailing Hall of Fame in 2011 and currently serves as its President. He has also served as Chairman of the Leukemia Cup Regatta since 1994 and was President of U.S. Sailing from 2009-2012.
Gary’s book, “Gary Jobson: An American Sailing Story,” will be available for purchase and signing, and a cash bar will feature sailors’ libations.
Doors open at 3:30 p.m. on March 9th, admission $15 for adults. For additional information and reservations, please call 410 226-5904 or e-mail [email protected].
