Pierce Home Builders and Habitat Choptank Partner on Two Homes

November 16, 2014 by Habitat for Humanity

Share

A multi-family build project by Habitat for Humanity Choptank has been provided a big boost thanks to Pierce Home Builders. Rob Pierce and his crew donated a full day of labor to set the roof trusses on a duplex building. These two homes are part of a development on Port Street in Easton that will provide five affordable home ownership opportunities. The first three homes are already owner occupied with tax paying property owners.

Pierce has been in the building business for 35 years and has operated Pierce Home Builders of Easton for more than 10 years. “The community has been very good to us,” says Pierce in explaining what motivated the team to make this contribution. “We’ve stayed busy through a tough time. That’s why we’re here to give back.”

This is not the company’s first time joining with Habitat Choptank. The partnership began over 10 years ago when the Pierce crew framed a single family Habitat home in Unionville in just two days.

“The crew from Pierce brings the same energy and sense of professionalism to our job site that they offer their customers,” notes Habitat Choptank executive director Nancy Andrew. “Given how hard last winter was, we are eager to have the Port Street duplex closed in. It’s in kind donations of labor like this that help move our construction schedule ahead.”

The Port Street development is part of Habitat Choptank’s ambitious 25 in 5 initiative, a program to complete 25 new home ownership opportunities over a five year period. Fourteen of these homes have been completed, and currently, the nonprofit builder has five homes underway with plans to start at least four more in the coming year if funds can be raised.

Since 1992, Habitat Choptank has empowered 63 low-income ‘partner families’ from Talbot and Dorchester counties to build a better future for themselves through home ownership. Habitat funds the construction or rehab of each energy efficient new home and then provides the mortgage financing. At settlement, the affiliate takes back a 30-year no-interest mortgage. Each buyer assumes the full responsibilities of ownership, including repaying the loan, retaining home owners insurance, paying property taxes and maintaining their home. For information about home ownership, to volunteer with Habitat Choptank or to make a donation, visit www.habitatchoptank.org or call 410-476-3204. Pierce Home Builders can be reached by calling 410-820-0531.

I happen to have the pleasure of playing pick up soccer with Rob. He is always a sportsman and gentleman on the field – not to take away from the fact that he is a really good player! He is so low key about his service to the community. I think it’s great that the Talbot Spy has brought Rob and his company’s contributions to Habitat for Humanity to the attention of the Mid-Shore community.
