Troika Gallery will exhibit the paintings of two Plein Air Judges, West Fraser and Kenn Backhaus, coinciding with Plein Air Easton. Plein Air Judges, Unite will open on July 7, 2017, on First Friday Gallery Walk and run through August 28, 2017. Fraser, the current Judge for PAE and Backhaus, the Judge in 2007 will give an art talk, “What is the Role of Art and the Artists in Today’s World?” on Saturday, July 22 at 2:15 pm in Troika Gallery following the popular Quick Draw event in downtown Easton. Kenn Backhaus is a top selling Troika Gallery Artist.
West Fraser is an American artist in the Plein Air and representational tradition, known for richly painted, atmospheric vistas of cities, coasts, and the landscapes of his native Georgia and South Carolina Coast to the hills of Tuscany. He has had nine solo museum exhibitions in the Midwest, the Southeast, and California and his art hangs in permanent collections of museums across the United States, Bermuda, and is in the permanent collection of the White House Historical Association. He is a member of Salmagundi Club, a Signature Artist Member of Plein Air Painters of America, the California Art Club and served as an art commissioner for the state of South Carolina for nine years. His book Painting the Southern Coast: The Art of West Fraser was released in 2016, featuring paintings of the southeast United States. West is the 2017 Competition Judge for PAE.
Kenn Backhaus is the most nationally accredited Bucks County, Pennsylvania Impressionist living today. He is a Master Level Artist in both the Oil Painters of America and the American Impressionist Society and a member and past President of the Plein Air Painters of America. He has achieved Signature Member status, the highest level, in the California Art Club. His awards include, Best in Show, Collector’s Choice and Artist’s Choice and his work has hung in several museum shows. Kenn was a host artist in the APT Television Series, Passport and Palette and the PBS Series Plein Air, Painting the American Landscape. Featured in Plein Air Magazine’s 2016 June/July issue, Kenn was on the cover of Plein Air Magazine in 2011 Fall and appeared in a 2012 March article. Published in two books; Art of the National Parks, 2013 and 100 Plein Air Painters of the Mid-Atlantic in 2014, Kenn’s artistic expertise is well recognized. He judges numerous national shows and is passionate about the historical traditions of representational painting.
