The Rotary Club of Easton recently held its second annual “Flags for Heroes.” This event serves as a fundraiser for Easton Rotary’s Youth and Community Fund as well as for various veteran and hero-related organizations within the local community.
The “Flags for Heroes” event once again provided members of the local community with an opportunity to honor their personal heroes including family members, friends, veterans, active members of the armed forces, teachers, firefighters, police officers and other individuals who have made a positive impact on their lives.
During the event, 503 American flags, sponsored by community members and local businesses, were displayed at multiple locations in the Easton area including The Talbot County Community Center, Idlewild Park and the Talbot County Court House. Local community partners for the event included Easton Utilities; First Media Radio, LLC, 96.7 WCEI/94.3 WINX; and Chesapeake Publishing.
Last year, monies raised by The Rotary Club of Easton from this event were donated to seven organizations, many of which provide services to veterans. Those organizations who received funds from the Club were Talbot Hospice, who received specific funding for veterans, who comprise 20% of the patients spending their last days at Talbot Hospice House and half of whom are in the low to no income category; Marine Moms – Bethesda, a locally based organization who provides homemade lunches for the patients and their families at the Walter Reed/Bethesda Hospital at least once per month; Talbot County Mental Health Association, who received funding for their Veterans Fund which assists Eastern Shore veterans in need; Evergreen Cove, who provides classes in yoga and relaxation to veterans with combat stress anxiety and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder; the Talbot County Paramedic Foundation, who received funding toward the purchase of Life Pak “15” Monitor defibrillators, which are the most current technology in cardiac monitoring and life saving capability; the Easton Police Department; and the Easton Volunteer Fire Department.
This year, the proceeds from “Flags for Heroes,” which netted nearly $23,500, will be distributed in September.
Volunteers, including Easton Rotarians and local members of our armed forces, assisted with the display of 503 American flags throughout Easton for the Rotary Club of Easton’s second annual “Flags for Heroes” event.
