“Doorways into Talbot County History” is the theme for the Talbot House and Garden Tour, scheduled for Saturday, May 10 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The tour features six historic waterfront properties with glorious present-day gardens in what was known as the Miles River Parish.
Descendents of the Lloyds of Wye House owned three of the featured estates: Wye Heights Plantation, Knightly, and Presqu’ile, where Francis Scott Key once lived. Wheatlands was built by General Perry Benson who helped repel the British attack on St. Michaels in 1813. Lombardy is an early 20th century home attached to its historic 18th century wing, while River Bank is a horticulturist’s dream. Tour participants are sure to be enchanted with the beauty of these homes and their lovely gardens.
“We are delighted to share some of the wonderful historical homes in the Miles River Neck region of Talbot County where we grew up and live today,” says Caroline Benson, who co-chairs the event with her sister Nancy Thompson. “These magnificent houses have not only survived, but flourish today under the stewardship of the present owners who are so gracious to open their homes and gardens for this very special tour.”
Sponsored by the Talbot County Garden Club, the tour is part of the annual Maryland House and Garden Pilgrimage. A Maryland tradition for 77 years, the Pilgrimage offers the opportunity to explore some of Maryland’s most fascinating and noteworthy properties across five areas in Maryland. In addition to Talbot County, homes and garden in Prince George’s County, Baltimore County/Parkton, Calvert County, and Kent County will also be open for tours.
