The St. Michaels Art League has announced the winners of the 2021 Martha Hudson Awards for excellence in watercolor.
Martha Hudson was well-known in the community for her watercolors depicting scenes of Eastern Shore Life. As a young art student, Martha was given a grant to use for the continuation of her studies. In return, she generously left an endowment for an award to be given each year by the St. Michaels Art League to a deserving watercolor artist.
The judge for this exhibit was Carolyn Councell, an award-winning artist and graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art. She has experience in commercial art, fine art and teaching, and is currently an adjunct professor of Art at Anne Arundel Community College.
First place was awarded to Deborah McFarlin for her painting “Great Blue on Blue,” Second Place went to Joan Cranor for “Passages,” and third place to Claudia Chesley for “Delighted.”
Honorable mentions went to Camille Woodbury for “Dancing Reflections” and to Stacey Sass for “Sunset in the Marsh.”
The complete works in this exhibit can be seen at the St. Michaels Branch of the Talbot County Free Library, 106 Fremont St., during regular library hours through January 27th, 2022.
This program is funded in part by a grant from the Talbot County Arts Council with revenues provided by the Maryland State Arts Council. For more information about the St. Michaels Art League visit Smartleague.org.
