Editor’s note: As the COVID-19 pandemic moves into the recovery and vaccination phase, we are adjusting our daily update to focus on several important statistics detailing how local counties are faring in the pandemic, as well as the long-term trends for key statistics.
Key points for today
• The state’s 7-day positivity rate is 6.64%, a decrease of 0.2 percentage points. The positivity rate has generally been declining since Jan. 5 after a general increase that began in late October.
• Talbot County’s 7-day average positivity rate is 6.28%, down 0.8 percentage points from yesterday.
• More than 10% of Talbot County’s population has gotten a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
Francine De Sanctis says
I am heartened by the 10% first dose vaccination rate.
However, finding a vaccination site is proving to be quite a challenge. Outside of filling out a Health Department application on line, can you please give me suggestions as to other possible avenues for help?
Eileen A. Deymier says
While it is helpful to see the progress on vaccinations, it would be a disservice to readers to omit the current status of Covid-19 cases each day. Per your earlier reporting & format, in the last 10 days (1/16-1/25) there were 190 cases reported.
This pandemic is far from over.Talbot County Health Dept. Covid information website today states: “Due to inadequate vaccine doses allocated to Talbot County Health Department this week by the state government, we will be unable to proceed to Phase 1C this week as originally planned. We will continue to prioritize Phase 1B recipients for the time being.”
Please note the health department is only given 1-2 days notice of its vaccine allocation for the upcoming week.
Many residents realy on the Spy for complete reporting on the Covid-19 issue.
Tom Alspach says
Totally agree that the daily case count should not be eliminated, and don’t understand why you are doing this. Far more meaningful here than the attractive graph of Maryland’s “daily hospitalizations.”
Warren Davis says
I completely agree with Eileen Deymier. We need continuation of previous reporting format. Make additions if helpful.
Arthur Dent says
Excluding the daily Covid numbers for Maryland and Talbot County is a mistake. We are nowhere near the level of vaccinations that would justify terminating the daily case data. Please report that information again.
DANNA MURDEN says
I like to know where you got your 10% first dose number. A friend of mine just told me she was one of the lucky 150 to get the vaccine on Friday. 150 is no way 10% of anything when we are talking about people waiting for the vaccine. I think I believe my friend who was there and got it before I believe this 10% crap.
John Griep says
The 10% includes those who were vaccinated in phase 1A, which includes health care workers.
DANNA MURDEN says
That still does not make 10%. Also a lot of our healthcare workers do not live in Talbot County. With the stats that I read from the government and the population of Talbot County 10% is a very inflated number.
John Griep says
Thanks for the comments and for reading The Spy. We were looking to clean up the daily update by reducing the number of tables and graphs to key statistics and trends, but we have heard your thoughts and will add back the daily numbers.
Dee Smith says
I was also a little concerned about the absence of the daily positive case count. However, even more concerning is that covidactnow.org cites that Talbot’s positivity rate is 9.7%. I have been following both The Talbot Spy and Covidactnow.org for several weeks and notice that The Talbot Spy posts data that is generally 3 percentage points below that listed by the other site. Covidactnow.org states that its data comes from local and state health departments, as well as the U. S. Dept. of Health and Human Services. Georgetown, Stanford and the Harvard Global Health Institute put the data together so that each county in each state in the country will have a clear picture of the current Covid situation. Of course, The Talbot Spy gets its information from the Talbot Health Department. I just cannot understand the discrepancy.
Pete Borchardt says
I miss the current active case count and the graph with daily cases and moving averages.
I like the positivity rate graph.
