It’s hard to believe it has been a year since the Spy launched the Habitat section! Since the first house was Morning Glory Cottage in Bozman, I wanted to celebrate today’s anniversary with another cottage charmer. The gables at the front and back, the front porch and the additions of side gable wings give this one-story cottage great curb appeal. This house had a complete make-over while preserving original details like the corbeled brick mantel of the living room fireplace. The front porch and a rear deck off the family room separated from the master suite’s deck by a tall hedge for privacy extended the living space.
I liked how the front door opened into an entry alcove instead of opening directly into the living room. The open plan of the living, dining and kitchen areas worked very well and windows on the front, side and rear walls brought sunlight throughout the day. The open plan was anchored by the very striking multi-colored hickory floors. The living area’s fireplace was flanked by two wide wall openings on axis to the rear windows of the family room behind the living area for views to the rear yard and great flow for entertaining family and friends.
Special details in the kitchen were the copper farmhouse sink, the stove hood embellished with a fleur-de-lis and moldings and the Gothic arch tops of the glass fronted upper cabinets on either side of the stove. Another detail I liked was the sliding barn door at the side wall of the family room which was a more stylish way to access the bedroom wing beyond than a pocket door.
Perhaps the biggest surprise was the spacious walk-in closet for the master bedroom with custom built-ins for storage and a window for daylight. The linear plan of the master bath with the bowfront tub/shower combo in the middle gave the toilet privacy and the window at the end let light into the room.
Many thanks to the owners who welcomed me into their homes, the realtors and their administrative assistants who shared their listing photographs with me so I could tell each house’s story over the past year!
