Flying Dogs? How is that possible? Consultation with an aeronautical engineer might produce an answer, but this spy saw the evidence. On Friday, at the Waterfowl Festival in Easton, I saw more than a dozen in flight, some traveling more than twenty feet.
The Diving Dogs Competition consists of dogs running from a platform (the dock) into a large above ground swimming pool to demonstrate retrieving skills. Performances for the longest distance in the air and for the shortest time to hit the water, retrieve a training dummy, a substitute for a duck, and return to the dock are judged. The event also includes an opportunity for amateur dogs.
This spy chose not to enter his 10-year-old goldendoodle into the competition. When informed that she would not be asked to compete, the doodle wagged her tail.
The Diving Dogs Competition is this spy’s favorite part of the festival. It alone is worth the price of admission. The competition continues Saturday, November 13 and Sunday, November 14, so there’s still time to see the athletic, courageous, and beautiful dogs in action.
This year’s competition is being held at the Elk’s Lodge at 502 Dutchman’s Lane.
A Waterfowl Ticket is required for admission and is good for admission to all Festival events through Sunday. They are on sale at the Elk’s Lodge and at the main Waterfowl Festival site in downtown Easton. Visit the official Waterfowl Festival website for more information.
