Sihnja An Whiteley will present a demonstration in Sumi style painting with watercolor at the monthly meeting of the St. Michaels Art League on Monday, February 17, 2014.
A native of Korea, Sihnja An Whiteley received both her BA and MA degrees in European History and taught at the Ewha Womens University in Korea. She co-authored The History of Civilization and has published many articles. Sihnja studied Oriental brush painting, Chinese calligraphy and oil painting in private studios when she lived in Korea.
Sihnja continued her studies in art history and studio art at Washington College and took many workshops in watercolor. She has special enthusiasm in water media for its fluency, spontaneity and unpredictability. Her paintings are a synthesis of East and West: discipline of the East and freedom and individuality of the West.
She has taught watercolor painting and Oriental brush painting since 1985 and has exhibited her work at various galleries and group exhibits in Maryland.
The demonstration is free and open to the public and begins at 10:00 a.m. The meeting will be held at the Fellowship Hall of Christ Episcopal Church. St. Michaels Art League is partially funded by Talbot County Arts Council and Maryland State Arts Council.
