For some, an annual Ugly Sweater Party is just another excuse to laugh it up with friends during the holiday season. For St. Michaels’ Eastern Shore Brewing Company, a 3rd annual Ugly Sweater Party turned into a chance to give back. This year, brewery owners Adrian and Lori Moritz and bartender Jay Hudson concocted a new plan for the annual shindig. Instead of having a competition and prizes for the ugliest sweater, they raised funds for local charities.
“We’re pleased to announce that we have raised $833 for the St. Michaels Community Center and have received over 100lbs of ready to eat meals that will be donated to the Talbot Food Bank” said Moritz. “This was accomplished through the generosity of the local residents, musicians, and town visitors. Over 200 people attended throughout the company’s Ugly Sweater Party during the day and evening of December 13th. Musicians Uncle Ward, Road House Clams, Sam Pugh, Tony B. & Kenny Knopp entertained the crowd from 2:00 – 10:00 pm. With a cash or food donation, patrons received discounted Eastern Shore Brewing craft beers. 100% of the cash donation and 10% of the gross revenue from E.S.B.’s day was presented to Trish Payne, Executive Director of the St. Michaels Community Center on Monday.
“This really makes a difference” said Payne. “For $833, we can give 80 seniors a hot meal once a week for an entire year. Sharing meals with neighbors makes a difference in the lives of our often isolated seniors. The same amount could cover the cost for 40 kids to take an afterschool class for a semester. We’re thrilled with the tremendous support from our community.”
And that makes a win for everyone. For more information about the programs of the St. Michaels Community Center, see their website at www.stmichaelscc.org. Visit Eastern Shore Brewing at 605 Talbot St. in St. Michaels.
