A joyful sound rises from Union United Methodist Church on Thursday evenings, as the St. Michaels Gospel Choir prepares for their debut performance. The public is invited to attend their free outdoor concert at 6:30 p.m.Thursday, August 21, on the lawn in Muskrat Park on the St. Michaels harbor waterfront.
Directed by Leroy Potter, music director at Union Baptist Church in Easton, the choir brings together enthusiastic singers from area churches. Mr. Potter offers unique leadership with his infectious communication of the Gospel spirit. “Have fun with it”, he tells the group, as he effortlessly transposes the accompaniment upward, intensifying the emotional effect.
“When I was young,” Mr. Potter said, “My grandmother gave me a keyboard. I sat on the front steps and played it on my lap.” In 2012 Mr. Potter was inducted into the Gospel Hall of Fame of the Second Generation Church of Federalsburg, Maryland, in recognition of his service to God through song. Inspired by his example, the Gospel Choir members are looking forward to sharing their music with the Muskrat Park audience.
The ongoing free Thursday night series , “Summer Concerts in Muskrat Park”, is organized by the St. Michaels Community Center. The Gospel Choir program is sponsored by the Covenant Churches, including Christ Episcopal Church, St. Luke”s United Methodist Church and Union United Methodist Church as well as the Royal Oak Community Church and the New St. John’s United Methodist Church in Wittman. Covenant Churches works to unite the Bay Hundred Community. They sponsor a Lenten program, Easter sunrise service, and the June tent service, among other initiatives. For more information on the concerts visit www.stmichaelscc.org.
In case of rain, the concert will take place in the sanctuary of Christ Episcopal Church, which is across the street from Muskrat Park.
