St Michaels in Bloom, the volunteer organization dedicated to the beautification of St Michaels with flowers and landscapes, discovered late last week that it is expecting…….. QUADRUPLETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
On Friday, Joyce Glackin, chairperson of the SMIB Honeymoon Bridge flowering hayrack basket project, reported that one of the baskets had been vandalized. Much to her chagrin and disappointment, the flowers in one of the hayaracks had been smashed and significantly disturbed. “After our hard work planting and caring for our flowers, it was of course a disappointment and we were anxious to discover the vandals responsible for the damage.”
Shortly thereafter, the vandal was in fact discovered because they left evidence all over the crime scene. However, it wasn’t a person. It was a duck. And the evidence was 4 duck eggs that were laid in the hayrack basket and are awaiting hatching. The Mother, as it turns out, is an excellent Mom sitting on her eggs and taking great care to ensure their gestation safety.
SMIB is looking forward to becoming a proud grandparent in less than a month. In the interim, a mesh protective enclosure (thanks to St Michaels Resident Tommy Fannon who constructed a makeshift cradle cover) has been placed over the hayrack basket to protect Mommy Duck and her eggs until hatching.
So if you walk over the bridge, please observe quiet for the nursery and expectant Mommy Duck and take care not to disturb her during this important period. Obviously she needs her privacy and rest as she will have her hands full when her 4 fuzzy babies hatch.
SMIB is launching the “Name the Babies” contest. So far, we only have one name suggestion for the baby chicks when they hatch – Apricot, Persimmon, Peach and Cherry Blossom…. Suggested as a nod to their fuzzy pale color when they hatch.
If you would like to submit your baby names for the SMIB Baby Naming Contest, submit them to the StMichaelsinBloom group in either Facebook or Instagram. St Michaels in Bloom will post them, judge the entries and announce the winner.
Stay tuned for updates from the soon to be proud grandparents of Baby Ducks from St Michaels in Bloom!
