The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will begin work next week to reconstruct brick sidewalks along MD 33 (Talbot Street) in the town of St. Michaels in Talbot County. The work is part of an overall $2 million pedestrian safety and access project that will upgrade MD 33 sidewalks through St. Michaels from Lee Street to Spencer Avenue to meet current Americans Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. This phase is expected to continue through the fall and winter, weather permitting.
Starting Monday, September 12, crews will work on MD 33 at the Dodson Avenue intersection on the north side of town and work south toward the center of the business district. Motorists can expect occasional single-lane closures between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., Mondays through Fridays. MDOT SHA contractor McDonnell Landscape Inc., of Brookeville, will use signs, cones and barrels to alert motorists about the lane closures, and a flagging operation will be in place to guide traffic through the work zone.
The overall pedestrian safety and access project includes reconstruction of existing concrete sidewalks, reconstruction/resetting of existing brick sidewalks and conversion of some concrete sidewalks to brick in the historic business district area.
Work began last fall and crews recently completed reconstruction of concrete sidewalks north and south of the downtown area. Work in the historic business district is being performed in the fall and winter to minimize impact during the busy tourist season. Crews will work during daytime hours. It is my understanding the State Hwy offered to do this work at night to be less disruptive to Businesses, the schools, tourists and everyday folks that travel up and down the road all day.
Why wasn’t this option looked at more seriously and instead inconvenienced the majority instead of a chosen few?
