The Commissioners of St. Michaels passed their proposed 2013 budget on Wednesday, which will reduce taxes over 10 percent for both residents and businesses for the second year in a row.
The town’s real property tax rate of $0.58 per hundred dollars of assessed value will be reduced by 10.3 percent to $0.52. The Commissioners also reduced the personal property tax rate on town businesses from $0.58 per hundred dollars of personal property value to $0.52.
The Commissioners also reduced funds to be appropriated to the St. Michaels Tourism Board by $24,000 – the amount that the Tourism Board had budgeted for a billboard on Rt. 50 – in order to support the purchase of a garbage truck. The Commissioners were not in favor of promoting the town of St. Michaels through a billboard on Rt. 50.
In other business, the Commissioners passed Resolution 2012-04 authorizing the submission of an application for funding for Community Block Grant Funds from the State of MD, Dept of Housing and Community Development for the acquisition of property at 111 Mitchell St. for the development of a new low-income housing complex.
Ordinance 432, surrounding off-street parking, was introduced and referred to the Planning Commission for review. A public meeting to obtain comments on this issue will be held on May 14th at 6pm.
