Coffee: Our National Obsession

April 19, 2023 by Spy Desk

Coffee connoisseur Jay Hudson of Blue Heron Coffee Roasters

Where would we be without coffee – stumbling around in the dark, unable to wake up, cranky? For many people, a world without coffee is just too awful to contemplate.

Join roaster Jay Hudson of Blue Heron Coffee on April 26th or May 3rd for deep dive into our national brew.  Where does coffee come from, how does it grow, and why do some brews make it seem like you can feel your hair grow?

Hudson answers these and other questions as he takes participants on a journey through Central and South America, looking at the bean that helps us start our day. Hudson will talk about sourcing beans responsibly, working directly with farmers, roasting profiles – including how they are created and put into production.  Finally, he’ll fire up the coffee roaster and roast a couple of batches to see how the bean changes through the process. Experience the difference between different types of coffee and different levels of roasting.

Jay Hudson has 30 years of experience providing the finest of beverages across the service industry, taking pride in not only showcasing new and exciting ingredients, but also in their preparation.  From choosing a coffee farm, to roasting each bean to its perfect flavor profile, and everything in between, coffee has proved to be an endless path of learning which he has been on since taking over Blue Heron Coffee. Jay speaks the language of coffee, providing education but more importantly sharing his passion with others!

Coffee! Rethinking Your Morning Brew is one sessions on April 26th or May 3rd from 1:30 – 3 PM, in person at Blue Heron Coffee, 500 Talbot Street, St Michael. $20.  To register, visit https://chesapeakeforum.org

Dive into Tricky Philosophical Questions with Chesapeake Forum This Spring

April 4, 2023 by Spy Desk

What is virtue?  Could you define it?  Some of the most tangled questions about virtue and knowledge were posed by Socrates, famous for his debate method (and for the comment that “the unexamined life is not worth living”).  Join Forest Hansen, Ph.D and the Chesapeake Forum on April 19th for an examination of the nature of virtue using Plato’s The Meno as a guide.

Meno begins the dialogue by asking Socrates whether virtue is taught, acquired by practice, or comes by nature. In order to determine whether virtue is teachable or not, Socrates tells Meno that they first need to determine what virtue is.

This short dialogue provides a good introduction to Plato’s (and Socrates’) thinking. It will serve as helpful preparation for Plato’s longer, more challenging work, The Republic, which will be offered in the Fall 2023 semester.

The Meno is a work of philosophical fiction, based on real people who took part in important historical events. Plato wrote it probably about 385 B.C.E., and placed it dramatically in 402 B.C.E. Socrates was then about sixty-seven years old, and had long been famous for his difficult questions about virtue and knowledge.

The Meno is three (3) sessions, April 19th, 26th and May 3rd from 10 -11:30 am. ZOOM with course recording.  $40.  To register, visit https://chesapeakeforum.org.

Emotional What? Learning to Develop Emotional Intelligence

April 3, 2023 by Spy Desk

What is emotional intelligence and how does it affect our day to day decisions and interactions?  More importantly – how can you develop it?

In Chesapeake Forum’s new course Emotional Intelligence:  Learning to Lead with Humanity, starting on April 19th, instructor Jahnae Wallace tackles the subject head on.  Through purposefully designed and facilitated discussions,  participants will examine and take inventory of what drives them – their moral compass and constitution – and how that translates into their environment and the world at large.

Participants will learn to access, increase, and capitalize on their Emotional Equity for the purpose of healing, repairing, and building relationships. The course encourages real and useful self-awareness built from an introspective look at our core values: their roots, how they inform our opinions and responses, and how we can use them to be at our best, not only for ourselves but for others.

Jahnae Wallace has a Master’s Degree in Conflict Analysis and Dispute Resolution and has been employed in public service for well over 20 years. She is a trained Mediator and has served on various Boards and Commissions relevant to social justice, criminal reform, and historic preservation.

Emotional Intelligence:  Learning to Lead with Humanity is three (3) sessions, April 19, 26th and May 3rd from 5:30 – 7 PM.  HYBRID (in person at the Easton Family YMCA, ZOOM or recording).  $40.  To register, visit https://chesapeakeforum.org.

You Too Can Practice Conservation Landscaping!

April 1, 2023 by Spy Desk

Let’s face it, the birds and bees can use all the help they can get these days.  Fortunately, there’s plenty that gardeners can do to provide much needed habitat and still have an attractive garden.

Chesapeake Author Series: Fierce Joy: A Medical Mystery, Spiritual Adventure and Love Story

March 19, 2023 by Spy Desk

Joy is not a word most would associate with pain but for Eastern Shore author Ellen Schecter living with two autoimmune disorders required retooling her mindset to begin to understand that it is possible to be sick without suffering.

Schecter’s memoir Fierce Joy, a Medical Mystery, Spiritual Adventure and Love Story, is Chesapeake Forum’s choice for its second Local Author series on Wednesday, March 22nd at the Peachblossom YMCA.  In it, Schecter recounts how she had to learn to live with her conditions as a mature woman, revisiting childhood trauma around her father’s multiple illnesses and her misunderstandings about disease and death. She found that her childhood experiences impacted how she was able to manage her illness, including a fear of needles which affected her ability to self-administer daily shots needed to keep her conditions in check.  How she eventually learned to do that is one of the many stories in this book that illustrate Schecter’s incredible drive and determination to have as much of a normal life as possible.

In Schecter’s telling, fierce joy is not an easy, saccharine happiness but the joy that flames up out of harsh circumstances.  Her message is that you don’t need to feel helpless when you get sick.  It may not be possible to control your body but you can control your responses to it and to what disease does to your body.  Schecter shares how she educated herself, found appropriate medication, created cooperative relationships with her doctors and generally, refused to be “squelched”.  As she says,  “we can decide how to live now – differently.”

Fierce Joy, Chesapeake Forum’s Author Series, is one (1) session from 10-11:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 22nd, in-person at the Peachblossom YMCA, ZOOM or recording.  $15.00.  To register, please visit https://chesapeakeforum.org.

War, Poverty, Water … One Man’s Journey Through the Developing World

February 25, 2023 by Spy Desk

On one particularly memorable birthday, international development expert Bruce Purdy found himself in an uncomfortable position.  The Afghani warlord he’d been sent to help had just told him that if he didn’t turn around and leave immediately, he would personally kill him.  Purdy didn’t need to be told twice, which is why he is alive today to tell that story and others in A Journey Through the Developing World starting Thursday, March 7th.

Purdy takes participants on a wild rollercoaster of a ride from the Civil War in Beirut to the Velvet Revolution in Eastern Europe, and more recently, to the chaos and confusion rising out of the Arab Spring as he discusses the policies, procedures, major actors and tough challenges facing much of the globe.  Learn about the difficulties of rebuilding trust in fragile financial systems, investing in economic development and infrastructure, funding basic services like water and sanitation, harnessing the massive influx of people migrating into urban areas, or grappling with gut-wrenching poverty. Infused throughout the course will be personal vignettes — some humorous and some not so humorous — of more than 45 years of one man’s trek and his quest to make a difference.

Purdy is an international development consultant with more than four decades of experience planning and financing rural and urban infrastructure projects in more than 25 emerging and developing economies. His experience includes planning and implementing donor-funded programs within the water and sanitation, education and transportation sectors, and working directly with national, regional and municipal officials and civil society institutions to create the conditions for reform and to implement policies to improve service provision to local citizens. Purdy holds a B.A. from Ohio Wesleyan University, an M.A. from the University of Maryland, and undertook extensive coursework in strategic and organizational planning at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. Currently, Purdy is developing the Global Urban Leadership Program in the School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland.

A Journey Through the Developing World is two sessions, Tuesday March 7th and 14th from 1-2:30 PM. HYBRID (in person at the Peachblossom YMCA, via ZOOM or recording.). To register, visit https://chesapeakeforum.org.
