Imagine an approximately seven-acre estate with about 460 feet of water frontage along the Miles River and expanses of lawn with old growth oak trees for shade, containing the perfect family compound with a main house, guest house linked to the main house by a deck/walkway and a two-story apartment above a boathouse. The boater in your life would appreciate the boathouse and the deep water pier. The equestrian and horses in your life would delight in the lush grazing fields, four fenced paddocks, a run-in shed with metal roof and weathervane, a stable with adjoining storage, the drive-through horse-truck-&-trailer/RV storage building and tack room /office.
The one-story main house has a linear plan that angles and steps back to provide stunning views of the water from most of the main rooms and the multiple gables and the lower elevation guest suite break up the massing. The house was originally constructed by a well-known local builder and over the past three years, the current owner, who is an architectural interior designer, has transformed the house with luxurious finishes and materials. The bright blue framed French entry door with sidelights and a semicircular transom is recessed into the front elevation to create a porch with a vista on axis to the rear glass wall with its sliding doors and semicircular transom for total transparency. Once inside, the multiple sources of daylight from pairs of sliding doors with full height sidelights, semicircular transoms and skylights reflect the light off the white walls and ceilings. The beautiful chestnut floors in many rooms add color and texture.
The open plan entry, living room, dining room, kitchen and sunroom are the hub of the house. The sitting area around the fireplace has sliding doors to the deck that is much closer to the water than is allowed today. When one is seated you feel as if you are on a luxurious barge as the view through the windows is an expanse of water. The dining area has an artisan wide planked table with rattan chairs and the unique overhead light fixture is a former trap that has been cleverly converted to its new use. The spacious kitchen has a skylight over the center island and the sink is located in the leather Quartzite countertop for views of the water through the living room’s wall of glass and the herringbone pattern of tile on the full height backsplash above the stove adds texture and pattern. The sunroom projects toward the water with windows on three sides and its pitched ceiling creates space for another semicircular transom that echoes the living room’s glass wall. The tile floors and comfortable furnishings make this the perfect space for relaxing after a day on the water or on horseback.
The master bedroom has two angled areas, one of which is a wide window seat below a four-unit window and built-ins on each side. Combined with the other angled area with its three unit window creates a wrap-around effect for panoramic water views. French doors lead from both the master bedroom and the master bath to separate decks. The master bath has a free standing soaking tub centered on the windows and a glass shower built for two. I loved the “corner” office with its pitched ceiling, contemporary furnishings, colorful, playful art and windows on both walls to the water.
The same attention to detail is found in the spacious one-bedroom guest suite, connected by a deck walkway to the main house. The large living/dining room has a French door to th e lawn and double windows on each side for water views. I loved the bedroom with its black and white theme, wood four-poster bed with white linens, bright white walls and pitched ceiling. The boat shaped vertical bookcase was quite appropriate and the dog’s head pillow was another deft whimsical touch.
The apartment above the second garage has a full length deck with bird’s eye views of the water. The open plan living-dining- kitchen is full of light from windows on three sides and the pitched ceiling adds volume to the space. One of the bedrooms takes advantage of the knee walls created by the pitched ceilings and faced the walls with vertical planks topped with lattice for a clever space saving headboard.
Huntington Point is indeed a rare waterfront offering in a class of its own. If the main house and guest suite were any closer to the water, they would be in the water. Brava to the current owner’s interior design skills!
