Tidewater Rotary Announces 4th Annual Flags for Cancer Fundraiser

June 24, 2023 by Spy Desk

The Tidewater Rotary Club is excited to present the 4th edition of Flags for Cancer, an event that raises awareness and funds for cancer research and support. Throughout the month of August, Easton will be adorned with vibrant flags, each color symbolizing a different type of cancer and honoring those who have faced the disease.

Supported by generous individuals and businesses, Flags for Cancer offers a striking visual display of colored flags across Easton. The primary goal is to keep cancer at the forefront of public consciousness while providing essential fundraising for local organizations dedicated to helping individuals in need.

Flags for Cancer Volunteers

Sponsorship opportunities are available for both individuals and corporations, with the option to sponsor a flag starting at just $50. By sponsoring a flag, participants pay tribute to a loved one who has battled cancer. The flags will be proudly showcased in town for the entire month of August, and the names of honorees will be featured on the Flags for Cancer website at TidewaterRotary.org/Flags.

The money raised from the event will directly benefit groups in the Delmarva region such as the Mike Menzies Fund, The Richard Slaughter Fund, Maryland Shore Pancreatic Cancer Foundation, and patients in need of funding at the Cancer Center. In addition, a portion of the proceeds will benefit Tidewater Rotary Club’s continuing support of the many efforts within Talbot County.

Tidewater Rotary Presents the 2nd Annual ‘Supplies for Service’ Drive

April 19, 2022 by Spy Desk

The 2021 ‘Supplies for Service’ effort netted household supplies to fill nearly 100 boxes and over $3,000 in monetary donations

The Tidewater Rotary Club’s Supplies for Service, a drive collecting household supply donations, is set to return during the first week of May. The household goods and essential supplies collected during the drive will benefit the Neighborhood Service Center and their mission to help the citizens of Talbot County.

Donations collected will be distributed to those in need by the Neighborhood Service Center using their “Mobile Food Pantry”. The demand for their resources dramatically increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. While food donations were steady, often forgotten are the needs for basic household items.

Tidewater Rotary stepped in last year to help meet those needs and is again asking for donations of paper towels, toilet paper, personal hygiene items, cleaning supplies, and other household essentials. The inaugural effort netted supplies to fill nearly 100 boxes and over $3,000 in monetary donations. The club looks to expand that impact in 2022.

“The community’s response to last year’s Supplies for Service drive was inspiring,” Tidewater Rotary Club President Chuck Lennon said. “Knowing that our effort made an impact on so many people throughout Talbot County made it an easy decision to bring the event back in 2022.”

Businesses and community organizations are asked to participate in the supply drive by putting collection boxes in their public spaces. Businesses may challenge their employees to participate or ask customers to stop by with donations. Organizations, churches, and clubs can also participate and help collect household goods for this important cause.

Those interested in participating as a drop-off location can visit www.tidewaterrotary.org/sfs to sign up. Community drop-off locations, list of supplies needed, and more details for individuals interested in helping can also be found on the website.

Tidewater Rotary Bowling Fundraiser Supports Talbot Humane

April 14, 2022 by Talbot Humane

The second annual Tidewater Rotary Bowling Fundraiser was held on Monday, April 4, at Easton Bowl. The event, first launched in 2019, had been sidelined for a couple of years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, club members were eager to come back together to relaunch the fundraiser and invite the community to come out and support Talbot Humane.

Lanes were sponsored by more than 20 local businesses and organizations. Approximately 125 bowlers participated in the festivities of the evening. Participants enjoyed 20 frames of bowling, food and drinks provided by Easton Bowl, and raffles. Bowlers and their guests made additional donations and fundraising contributions during the event.

Prizes were awarded for Top Bowler, Second Place, Last Place, and Best Dressed Bowler. Talbot Humane staff were on-site with information about how to adopt and support the shelter. Many bowlers brought their pups to enjoy the fun, some of which had been adopted from the local shelter.

The Tidewater Rotary Club event netted approximately $6,000 in total donations. Proceeds will support Talbot Humane’s mission to service animals and their owners of the Midshore with compassion, transparency and thoughtfulness.

“It was great to see two community-based organizations like Tidewater Rotary and Talbot Humane come together, join forces, and raise money for the shelter,” Tidewater Rotary Club President Chuck Lennon said. “We will look for other ways to work together in the future to continue supporting Talbot Humane’s mission.”

The Tidewater Rotary Club also set up several boxes for their Supplies for Service campaign. Many donations of household supplies were given as a prelude to the event’s official launch later this spring. Businesses, organizations, and individuals interested in participating in future Tidewater Rotary Club initiatives can visit www.tidewaterrotary.org to learn more.

Tidewater Rotary’s Supplies for Service Drive a Big Success

May 8, 2021 by Spy Desk

Eat Sprout was among the businesses and organizations participating as drop-off locations for Supplies for Service.

In April, Tidewater Rotary announced it was collecting household supplies for the Neighborhood Service Center as part of the club’s 10-year anniversary. The drive to support Talbot County’s underserved residents was called Supplies for Service, an homage to Rotary International’s motto of Service Above Self.

Businesses, organizations, and Talbot residents were invited to join the drive and the response was astounding. Eighteen Talbot County businesses and organizations joined the effort and helped exceed Tidewater Rotary’s goals and expectations.

Participating organizations invited their employees to collect and donate goods, asked patrons to participate, and gifted monetary donations to support the Neighborhood Service Center directly. Other places around Talbot County volunteered space for drop-boxes to be displayed so individuals that wanted to donate would have a location to drop-off supplies.

“We have always known this community is incredibly generous and this supplies drive once again proved it,” Tidewater Rotary President Lee Newcomb said. “We are so thankful for all the support.”

The effort netted household supplies to fill nearly 100 boxes and over $3,000 in monetary donations. Donated supplies included paper towels, toilet paper, personal hygiene items, cleaning supplies, and many other household essentials.

The Neighborhood Service Center will now deliver the community’s donations to those in need using their “Mobile Food Pantry”. The service provides help to homebound seniors, disabled individuals, and residents living in remote areas of Talbot County without transportations. There are over 120 households currently benefiting from this outreach.

“I am so appreciative of Tidewater Rotary for seeing the need and addressing it to the fullest,” Neighborhood Service Center Executive Director Marilyn Neal said. “These donations from our community and businesses will make a tremendous difference in the lives of some of Talbot County’s most vulnerable citizens.”

Tidewater Rotary sends out a special thank you to all the partners that supported the drive. A list of Supplies for Service participants can be found at www.tidewatereastonrotary.org. The club asks that you support these wonderful community-driven organizations whenever possible.

“On behalf of Tidewater Rotary and the Neighborhood Service Center, we thank the community for helping us celebrate our 10th anniversary and continue to live our motto, Service Above Self,” Lee said.

Stand Up Against Substance Abuse, ‘Go Purple’ with Talbot Goes Purple

September 1, 2020 by Spy Desk

Talbot County Sheriff Joe Gamble and Tidewater Rotary invite everyone to attend a virtual kick-off for Talbot Goes Purple at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1.

This year’s kick-off is virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but will livestream on multiple platforms, including Facebook. The kick-off will include brief remarks with Sheriff Gamble, and Lucie Hughes, of Tidewater Rotary, before officially going purple with Easton Utilities.

“We’re excited about year four of Talbot Goes Purple, even though obviously we have some challenges with getting our messages out into the community,” said Gamble. “COVID has really caused some major setbacks among people with substance use disorder, and we’re committed to finding new ways to reach youth and families here in Talbot County.”

New, virtual activities for this year include free film screenings of both “The American Opioid Crisis: Talbot Goes Purple,” a documentary from Ferrari Films that screened last year, and the latest film from Chris Herren, “The First Day.” TGP also has formed a student ambassador program that includes virtual projects with this year’s educational messages.

“Tidewater Rotary is proud to be a part of Talbot Goes Purple for the fourth year,” said Hughes. “It is critical we continue to educate the citizens of Talbot County.  While this year it may look a little different, I am confident our community will continue to support this effort.”

Easton Utilities’ support again includes the installation of 14,000 purple lights and 75 purple spotlights that will shine purple throughout downtown Easton for the month of September.

“As proud supporters of TGP, Easton Utilities remains committed to giving this important issue a visual presence in our community,” said Kelly Simonsen with Easton Utilities.

This is year four for the initiative, and the community can again display purple lights and gear starting Sept. 1 and throughout the month as a show of taking a stand against substance abuse. Purple lights and other fun stuff are available online at www.talbotgoespurple.org. Lights also are again available at E.D. Supply in Easton.

For information on our student ambassador program, email [email protected]. The program is open to all youth, ages 18 and under, in Talbot County with parent/guardian permission. Details about this year’s events will become available on the TGP Facebook page @TalbotGoesPurple.

Talbot Goes Purple is an awareness and educational prevention program that empowers our youth and our community to ‘Go Purple’ as a sign of taking a stand against substance abuse. The initiative includes purple clubs in our middle and high schools through which students learn they do not need drugs or alcohol to meet life’s challenges. The purpose of the project is to promote the ‘new conversation’ – one that includes prescription drugs, alcohol, marijuana and e-cigarettes

Talbot Goes Purple is an initiative of the Talbot County Sheriff’s Office and Tidewater Rotary, in partnership with Talbot County Public Schools, Saints Peter and Paul School and Mid-Shore Community Foundation.

Talbot Goes Purple is a component fund of the Mid-Shore Community Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization – donations to which are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.
