This November 24,1898 “ Easton Ledger” newspaper photograph is of the Railway and Steamboat Terminus of the Baltimore, Chesapeake and Atlantic Railroad Company at Claiborne, Maryland! The charter for this Baltimore to Claiborne Steamboat and then railroad to Ocean City, Maryland route was chartered at the Maryland Legislature on April 1, 1886. At that time it was the Baltimore and Eastern Shore Railroad Company and the run time was about 5 hours. On August 29, 1894 the assets of the Baltimore and Eastern Shore Railroad Company were purchased at public auction for a mere $400,000 and on September 1, 1894 it became the Baltimore, Chesapeake and Atlantic Railway. Very interesting history. I often stood on the Bellevue dock and thought of the boats coming from the Western Shore. I never gave a thought that there was a rail connection to destinations further down the peninsula.
