This beautiful fleet of mostly Skipjacks and maybe seven two-masted Bugeyes was dredging for oysters near Poplar Island c. 1930. Soon after the skipjack was introduced to the Chesapeake Bay in the 1890’s it became the preferred oyster dredge boat. It has been estimated nearly two thousand skipjacks were built to dredge for oysters from the Chesapeake Bay. The peake building years were from the 1890’s through the first decade of the 1900’s.
