Easton Library to Host Lunch & Learn: “Reflections on Botanical Art”
On Thursday, December 12, at noon., the Easton branch of the Talbot County Free Library will host a lunch and learn program entitled “Reflections on Botanical Art.”A fusion of art and science, botanical art has pleased and educated mankind for thousands of years. As part of their exhibit (on view in the Easton library December 4 – 31), Talbot County artists Lee D’Zmura and Anna Harding will discuss the origins of botanical art and its evolution into a beloved contemporary art form.
Anna Harding is a master naturalist who turned botanical art as a way to document native species and educate the public about the beauty, magic, and importance of native plants. Her detailed images are rendered in graphite and colored pencil on paper and drafting film. Having studied under master artists, Harding now teaches at Adkins Arboretum. Her work focuses on capturing the beauty of the indigenous plants of both Maryland and New Mexico. This exhibit features her twelve month study of the collection at Adkins. Each month’s specimen is rendered in sensitive detail and rich color designed to draw the eye into the composition and stimulate curiosity and wonder, giving the viewer a deeper appreciation and understanding of heritage plants—from lowly fungi to stately paw paw trees. Harding, whose work is exhibited locally, is a member of the St Michaels Art League and the Working Artists Forum.
Lee D’Zmura is an award winning botanical artist whose work has been published in books, professional journals and magazines and exhibited throughout the country. She received a certificate of Botanical Art from the Brookside Gardens School of Botanical Art and has taught the subject at numerous venues. Her traditional botanical art is done in watercolor on paper and includes both native and exotic subjects: dandelions to orchids. In delicate detail her paintings tell the stories of the life cycles of plants while capturing their unique beauty. Working from live specimens, she documents her subject through sketches, color studies, botanical details, and photographs … before and after the flowers fade and fall. D’Zmura is a member of the American Botanical Art Society, both national and regional chapters, the St Michaels Art League, and the Working Artists Forum.
