Easton Library to Host 4th Annual Chesapeake Children’s Book Festival
On Saturday, June 8, from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., the Talbot County Free Library will host, in its Easton branch, the 4th Annual Chesapeake Children’s Book Festival. The Festival is a one-day, rain or shine, free event that celebrates children, community, diversity, and literacy.
This year’s Festival will feature twenty-five of the country’s finest children’s book authors and illustrators, including writers whose work has been published in The New York Times, O Magazine, and National Geographic. There will also be two former scientists among the authors, two attorneys, a native Creole/Patois speaker, and an artist who designed and built Muppets for Jim Henson. Many of this year’s writers have won important awards for their work; all of them went through a rigorous vetting process before being selected to participate in this year’s Festival. And of course, like all children’s book authors, they love to interact with their young fans.
The Chesapeake Children’s Book Festival traditionally serves as the kick-off event for the Talbot County Free Library’s annual Summer Reading Program. Children who sign up at the Festival for the Summer Reading Program will receive a voucher good for one free book (while supplies last) from the attending author of their choice. It’s always fun to see the pride children take in asking the author of their choice to sign their very own book. The theme of this year’s Summer Reading Program is “A Universe of Stories.”
This year’s Festival will also include a special appearance by two Star Wars costuming groups: The Rebel Legion and the Storm Troopers, Maryland’s official Star Wars cosplay group of the 501st Legion. Other activities on tap for the Festival include author readings, music, hands-on crafts, master gardeners, light refreshments, and more. And as with all library programs, all these activities—plus entrance to the Festival—will be absolutely free.
