Voting For The Best Candidate by Johnny O’Brien

As one of many “Independents for Jesse Colvin”, I have been pleasantly surprised by the number of Republican friends who have been willing to give Colvin an honest look. And many now plan to vote for him. I shouldn’t have been surprised.

These are deeply patriotic and open-minded folks who place ‘ Country above Party’ and quality-of- candidate over pure partisanship. They readily see that Jesse Colvin is a centrist, Servant Leader who will represent all of us in District One.

And that Harris is not..and will not.

And yet other Republican friends acknowledge Colvin’s promise, have nothing good to say about Harris, and still say they must vote the party line. They echo the well-written LTE by Millicent Pitts last week elevating ‘Party above Country’ and  ‘ Tribe over candidate-quality’ at all cost. She defends this stance by saying that a fresh generation of servant leaders like Colvin can’t make a difference because their party leaders “will eat them for lunch”.

This is defeatist and disingenuous. It says that strength of character doesn’t matter when it is the thing that has mattered most when America is being tested. The true promise of this crucial Election is the large number of young veterans —Republicans and Democrats — women and men—who have committed unconditionally to reuniting our country and Congress in order to solve serious problems. These change leaders survived by tight teamwork and by running toward serious problems..not away from them. They have risked their lives repeatedly to serve our nation. So a Pelosi or McConnell are not going to stop them.

The worn out argument that good people won’t make a difference in Washington is disingenuous. It is a convenient cover for party extremists on either side for domination and control. But does any patriot really believe it is healthy for either Party to control the White House, the Senate, the House, and the Judiciary?

Really? Can you imagine if it were the Dems? It would be equally dangerous.

I suppose local Democrat’s version of Party domination would be “to always vote to keep Maryland Blue”. How silly. Most Dems and all Independents I know voted for Republican Wayne Gilchrest in his time and will for Hogan in this election..again.

Why? Because, like Colvin, they are simply the best candidates.

Letters to Editor

  1. Hugh (Jock) Beebe says:

Thanks Johnny O’Brien for your clear, cogent and refreshing statement that nicely summarizes the importance of Jesse Colvin’s campaign. A significant number of candidates all over the country running for the US Congress in 2018 together have enough experience and powerful motivation to generate their own momentum. If we, the voters, get out there and vote, change for the better will happen.

  2. Well presented, Johnny,
We need more men and women of character and integrity who value their name and reputation and will hold themselves accountable.
