September at The Green Phoenix gallery brings you a wide array of flora and fauna themed hand built pottery, by artist Emily Crandall.
“Ceramics has been a lifetime interest for me. When I was working in Wilmington, Delaware, I attended the Ceramics program at the University of Delaware for four years. We started by mixing our own clay, then moved on through the process of hand building, a technique well suited to sculptural forms. Operation of the wheel came the following year, as well as glaze mixing and special effects of all kinds. Stacking and firing the kiln took place at the University, although we made a field trip to a wood burning kiln and saw what a different outcome that produces.
“Today, I have a pottery studio at home and use an electric kiln. My work is inspired by plants. I am an enthusiastic gardener! Many of my pots are created with clay that is impressed with leaves, bark, or other natural materials for design and texture effects. My pots have been shown and sold at Maryland Hall in Annapolis, as well as the Academy Art Museum, Trinity Cathedral, and the Green Phoenix here in Easton.”
Gallery owner Andi Tassencourt invites the public to The Green Phoenix on First Friday, September 7, from 5 to 8 pm, to meet Crandall, see her newest works, and to enjoy some wine, yummy finger foods, good company and conversation. Says Tassencourt, “Emily’s inspiring flora and fauna themes, as well as the one-of-a-kind hand built uniqueness of her creations, are a wonderful complement to the international flavor of hand crafted works by our Fair Trade artisans, in combination with our eclectic mix of fine, artisanal crafts by local artists, and oil paintings by Diane DuBois Mullaly. All come together to offer an environment with a full range of creative arts for the community to enjoy!”
And FRIVOLOUS FIBERS Yarn Boutique, located inside The Green Phoenix Gallery, adds even more interest, featuring a new collection of its own line of gorgeous, hand-spun, and hand-dyed yarns.
