“Taking Care of Your Feet” will be the focus of the next Diabetes Support Group meeting, September 22, 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the UM Diabetes & Endocrinology Center at UM Shore Medical Center at Easton. Heather Stallings, DME, coordinator for Hill’s Drug Store, will be the presenter.
According to Doris Allen, BSN, RN, CDE, lead diabetes educator for the Center, diabetes is the leading cause of non-traumatic leg and foot amputations in the United States. “As many as one in five diabetic patients who develop a foot ulcer will suffer an amputation,” says Allen. “Learning proper foot care can help avoid this dire outcome. This presentation will offer a lot of very useful information for patients with diabetes and their caregivers.
The Diabetes Support Group meets monthly at the UM Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology, and is open to both patients and family members free of charge. To attend the September 22 meeting or to obtain more information about the Center’s classes, programs and services, call 410-822-1000 ext. 5757.
