The community is invited to hear the history and an update on The Hill Community, by Dr. Dale Green at the Talbot County Library in Easton on Monday, October 27th at 6:00. The event is sponsored by the Easton Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). Dr. Green will discuss the background of The Hill, believed to be the oldest community still in existence in the Nation, continuously inhabited by free persons of color (settled prior to 1790) and a neighborhood that embodies important aspects of history and culture on a national to international level.
He will share with us some interesting historical information about the 410 free persons who were living here in 1790, including the connection that abolitionists, such as Quaker preacher, John Woolman and sea captain Jeremiah Banning had to The Hill. He will also bring us up to date about the progress that is being made as The Hill gets closer to being designated as the oldest free slave community in the US; and new findings at the archeological digs this summer.
Professor Dale Glenwood Green is the Chair of the Historic Preservation Program and an Assistant Professor of Architecture in the School of Architecture + Planning at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland.
