Joan Maloof, Professor Emeritus, Salisbury University will be the speaker for the Brown Bag Lunch at St. Michaels branch of the Talbot County Free Library on Monday, October 5, 2015 at noon.
Concerned that so few old-growth trees exist, Maloof offers a lovely collection of essays as spur and solace. Professor Maloof has probably visited more US old-growth forests than anyone alive today. In this presentation she will discuss what remains of these never-logged forests and what makes them so special – including the latest scientific findings. She will also discuss the successful expansion of the Old-Growth Forest Network – an organization formed to ensure that each county in the US capable of supporting forest growth will preserve at least one forest open to the public. We welcome you to join in this discussion of special forests and how they might be saved for the next generation.
Maloof is the author of Teaching the Trees: Lessons from the Forest and Among the Ancients: Adventures in the Eastern Old-Growth Forests. She is a Professor Emeritus at Salisbury University where she formerly taught biology and environmental studies. Maloof has a PhD in ecology from the University of Maryland, College Park. She is the founder and director of the Old-Growth Forest Network, and enjoys spending as much time as possible in beautiful, natural, places with good people.
The Friends of the Library are sponsors of the speaker series and everyone is invited to bring their lunch or a snack and enjoy coffee and dessert provided by the library. All library programs are free and open to the public. For more information you can check the library website at www.tcfl.org or call (410) 745-5877.
