In such a special, beautiful place we expected to find delicious meals. While the settings of our dinner, breakfast, and lunch restaurants were spectacular, each and every meal was terrible. Dinner in a well-known waterfront clam “bar” was ridiculous. After an hour we still hadn’t gotten our clams, and never did. Scallops were good, but cold, service was abysmal. Breakfast outside at a main street restaurant served prepared egg dishes. Scrambled eggs were gray inside, although the local, college student waitress was very sweet. Not worth the drive. There are many other pretty towns that serve great seafood. Very disappointing.

What a strange place for a review.
However, knowing the stress that restaurants are under in St Michaels, this is a sign of the times. It’s a daily struggle to provide the food and service St Michaels is famous for.
Labor shortages, increased food costs ($40 a pound crab), a lack availability of product (even finding to go boxes) along with a lack of support from town government during one of the most trying times in recent history makes keeping the door open a daily struggle.
St Michaels government recently cut its already small marketing budget which not only attracts visitors but staff- something that that the restaurants sorely need.
Unlike in other small towns, the current St. Michaels Commission has never asked a simple question – what can we do to help?
Allowing some temporary rule breaking when it comes to outdoor seating was great-but only achieved by small business kneeling before the greatness of the commissioners to beg for their infinite wisdom and leniency.
By cutting the budget, the town government also sent a clear message to the small businesses and employees – St Michaels government does not want to help you – you are on your own.
There are other anti business proposals on the horizon – truly sad. Despite what they say – some people don’t appreciate the value small business brings to a small town
However, for the most part, the restaurants in St Michaels continue to provide great service and great food, I hope you give the town another try.
Unfortunately, your review probably pleases some people in town – especially your statement “There are many other pretty towns that serve great seafood.”
Let’s hope that the restaurants banding together is a small step towards St Michaels being a unified town that’s famous for its history, dining, shopping and vibrant community.
