The Oxford Community Center invites all recreational boaters to an interactive presentation on boating safety skills and emergency preparedness. The event will take place on April 11th at 5:30 pm and will be led by co-presenters Captain Gary Culver of Culver Yacht Services and Coast Guard BM1 Bryant Gooch. The event is open to the public and will be held at the Oxford Community Center, 200 Oxford Road, Oxford, MD, 21654

The presentation will cover a range of crucial topics including:

  1. Rules of the Road: Navigational rules and best practices.
  2. Safety Measures: Essential safety precautions for boaters.
  3. Weather Awareness: Understanding weather conditions for safer navigation.
  4. Radio and Communications: Effective communication on the water.
  5. Look Plan: The importance of planning ahead for a smooth journey.
  6. Safety Checks: Key checks before embarking on a boating adventure.
  7. BUIs (Boating Under the Influence): Understanding the dangers and consequences.
  8. Possession: Legal aspects of possession related to boating.
  9. Emergency Drills: Preparing for unforeseen situations.

“We’ve brought together leading boating safety partners to equip our community members with the knowledge they need to boat more safely and responsibly,” said Liza Ledford, Executive Director of the Oxford Community Center. “We welcome novice and experienced captains alike.”

Attendees can expect a hands-on approach, minimizing traditional slideshows and encouraging group participation in various scenarios. The event is sponsored by Brewer Yacht Sales, Cutts and Case Shipyard, Pirate’s Cove Oyster Company, and Culver Yacht Service.

The event is free and open to the public. Doors will open at 5:30 pm. Refreshments and oysters will be available for purchase. For more details and event registration, visit https://oxfordcc.org. Space is limited, so sign up today to unleash your inner captain!
