More than 110 guests attended Talbot Mentors’ annual Spring Brunch fundraiser at Talbot Country Club on Sunday, May 20th. The gourmet brunch featured piano accompaniment by Judy Meyers. A silent auction, raffle and chances to purchase mystery wines and gift certificates provided additional opportunities for guests to support the mentoring organization.
The event was sponsored by UBS Financial Services. David Wheeler Honda Kia was a Table Host, and The Talbot Bank sponsored the gourmet omelet table.
Talbot Mentors President Jim Reed welcomed attendees and introduced the guest speaker, mentor Bill Brashares. Having just begun his third mentoring relationship through the organization, Brashares recalled his early attempts with his mentees “to speak across this divide of age and experience.”
He emphasized that the mentor is not meant to be a parent, therapist or financial resource for the youngster. Instead, he said, the mentor is “a new and reliable friend, with added perspective that may be of some value” to the child.
Brashares encouraged guests to consider becoming mentors, noting that it “gives you the chance to be inventive and creative in finding ways to reach across that divide.”
He concluded his remarks with special thanks to the volunteers who served on the Brunch Committee. Marykay Powell, Al Smith, Margot Miller, Martha Horner, Mike Gates, Barbara Noyes and Jim Reed coordinated the event, with staff support from Program Coordinator Jessika Best.
More than $20,000 was raised for the organization through the brunch and will enhance Talbot Mentors’ efforts to match youngsters with adult volunteers and provide the necessary support for successful relationships.
