Sultana Projects has released the preliminary schedule for its annual Downrigging Weekend Tall Ship and Wooden Boat Festival scheduled for October 26-28, 2012 in Chestertown, Maryland. Now in its twelfth year, Downrigging Weekend is one of the largest annual wooden boat festivals on the East Coast, attracting thousands of visitors each fall to see and sail on a fleet of historic wooden ships; see performances by world-class musicians; attend lectures by nationally recognized authors and historians; and spend a weekend in one of America’s best preserved historic seaports.
The fleet for Downrigging Weekend 2012 is anticipated to feature more than 100 wooden watercraft ranging in size from the ship KALMAR NYCKEL and impressive schooners PRIDE OF BALTIMORE II, A.J. MEERWALD, LADY MARYLAND, and SULTANA; all the way down to single seat custom kayaks and 1930s era Cocktail Class racing skiffs. “This is looking to be our most diverse Downrigging fleet ever,” commented Sultana Projects Board Chair Patti Hegland. “We’re particularly excited to be welcoming some great new boats, including the 1903 racing sloop WITCHCRAFT, the 1912 tugboat DELAWARE, and the newly launched sharpie schooner E.E. MOORE.” Wooden boat owners are invited to bring and exhibit their craft as part of Downrigging Weekend and registration information can be found on the Sultana Projects’ website.
Always a highlight of the festival, Downrigging Weekend will feature several opportunities for visitors to sail the historic Chester River aboard their choice of seven of the largest visiting ships and schooners. Festival visitors will also have opportunities to take in a fireworks show over Chestertown’s harbor; lectures by best-selling author Mark Kurlansky and Emmy Award winning filmmaker David Conover; multiple musical performances, including a concert with Academy Award nominated singer and instrumentalist Tim Erikson; maritime art exhibits; model boat building for children; family boatbuilding classes; a remote control model boat exhibition; and more.
