The Oxford Community Center will host an author’s book talk on Saturday, September 13, at 1 p.m., by Dr. Elaine Eff on her recently published work, The Painted Screens of Baltimore: An Urban Folk Art Revealed. A Maryland folklorist, co-founder of the Painted Screen Society of Baltimore, and part-time Eastern Shore resident, Dr. Eff brings her historical expertise, boundless enthusiasm, and several striking examples of this unique folk art to OCC. With antecedents in Europe, picturesque and practical painted screens were popularized in Baltimore rowhouses in the early 20th century, providing ventilation, privacy, and over time, a contemporary art form that continues. Recently interviewed by CBS Sunday Morning for an August broadcast date, Dr. Eff will have copies of her book on hand for sale and signing. Admission is free, but reservations are recommended.
Following Dr. Eff’s talk on Saturday, September 13, Eastern Shore-based artist John R. Iampieri will lead a Painted Screens Workshop at 2 p.m. All materials—paint, screens, brushes, sponges–and instruction will be provided, and no experience is necessary. Workshop participants will complete their own 14”x18” painted screen to take home. John’s own painted screens, large and small, are influenced by his life on the Eastern Shore and can be found on porches, businesses, and restaurants throughout the region. An enthusiastic teacher, John shares his love of screen painting with students of all ages in his classes, which are often sell-outs. Registration and pre-payment are required for the September 13 Painted Screens Workshop. $45 per person, ages 7 and up. Space is limited, so register soon by calling 410 226-5904.
