Author Stephen H. Grant discusses his book, “Collecting Shakespeare: The Story of Henry and Emily Folger,” at the Oxford Community Center on Sunday, September 28, 2014, at 4 p.m.
Published recently by Johns Hopkins University Press, “Collecting Shakespeare” recounts the American success story of Henry and Emily Folger of Brooklyn, a couple devoted to each other and to William Shakespeare. An April book review by the Washington Post notes that “Stephen H. Grant provides not just a biography, but also an account of the worlds in which the Folgers lived. The result is a superlative book, one that ranges from Amherst College in the 19th century to the gilded age of Standard Oil to the glory days of high-end book collecting.”
The Folgers acquired real estate on Capitol Hill near the Library of Congress and commissioned the design and construction of an elegant building that became the Folger Shakespeare Library and now holds more than 275,000 books and memorabilia related to the Bard.
Copies of “Collecting Shakespeare” will be available for purchase and signing. A light reception will follow the talk. Admission is free, but reservations are recommended.
