Are you an artist, or simply love the arts but cannot be actively involved in arts organizations that hold meetings during the day because you still work full time? The St. Michaels Art League is hoping to change that by gauging the interest of artists and art lovers who are employed full time and wish to join the League by holding some of the meetings in the evening to accommodate their schedules. The Art League will hold its first-ever evening meeting as an “Open House” on Monday, October 9, 2017 from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm. at Christ Church Parish Hall at 103 Willow Street, St. Michaels, MD.
According to Donna Finley, President of the St. Michaels Art League, “There is so much the Art League has to offer. We have demonstrations by award-winning regional artists; workshops and classes with regional and nationally-acclaimed artists;and the opportunity to display and sell artwork at open and juried member exhibitions held at various galleries in Talbot County. There is also the chance to give back to the community by displaying art in one of 20 retail establishments in St. Michaels during our annual Art Scavenger Hunt in July, which attracts tourists and residents alike, and benefits the businesses through increased traffic into their stores. Creating the original artwork that is made into the banners that hang along Talbot Street in St. Michaels from April through November each year is another of the many free community programs that membership offers. Participation in the annual ‘Under the Tent’ Labor Day Weekend Art Show and Sale, that draws people from around the county to see and purchase the art on display, is always popular with our members. This year, member artists also will demonstrate their process to create art in oil, watercolor, pastel, mixed media and ceramics at various times throughout the weekend Labor Day Show. ”
Ms. Finley continued, “The SMAL organization recognizes the limitations that daytime meetings place upon those who work that would otherwise become members if the meetings were in the evening. We know there are many artists and art lovers living on the Mid-Shore that are not yet members of the Art League. So, the Board has made the decision to reach out to this underserved constituency by extending an invitation to come to a meeting in the early evening, giving them a chance to get to know us, see the many opportunities to get involved by talking with the Committee Chairs, and watch award-winning artist, Lee D’Zmura, lecture on the history of botanical art while demonstrating her technique. Refreshments will be available.
If this meeting draws the kind of interest the Art League hopes, more evening meetings will be held to accommodate the schedules of those who work.”
